continued to make impressive pro

The Tar Heel offense will stay
basically the same this week, with
the emphasis on the run and Jon
athan Hall starting at quarterback.
"We want to make our run work
consistently," said fullback Brad
Lopp. "We think they're going to try
and blitz a lot, like The Citadel."
The fact that UNC has already
played a game should be to its
advantage, but a faraway stadium in
Lawrence may negate it. "What do
I know about Kansas? That's where
Danny Manning plays, and they play
good competition. I guess that's
about it," Lopp said.

Split-second tjming is the name of
the game for a soccer goalie. Making
decisions and reacting to them
quickly become second nature, as the
ball approaches time and again with
tremendous speed. This is the reality
UNC goalie Darren Royer, a sopho
more from Seattle, lives with every
game he plays.
"You react, it's all reaction,"
Royer said. "There is no room for
mistakes. I try to read the game and
solve problems before they happen.
If you hesitate, you get beat. You
have to concentrate on the game, you
can't let anything distract you."
Royer said that there was a lot
of pressure that goes with the
territory. "It is you against the other
team," he said. "At times the pressure
builds up a lot. You use that pressure
to psych yourself up , turn it around
and use it to your benefit."
Cross country teams start up season
By BOB YOUNG
Assistant Sports Editor
The North Carolina men's and
women's cross country teams open
their seasons this weekend when they
compete in the Old Dominion
Invitational in Norfolk, Va.
The men's team, which finished
fifth at the NCAA championships in
Milwaukee, Wis., last year, is look
ing to regain the ACC championship
form it had last year, despite the loss
to graduation of All-America
George Nicholas. This year's squad
is led by another All-American, Jim
Farmer, a senior from Raleigh.
Others who should see action in
the meet are Mike McGowan, Reg
gie Harris, Eric Landis, Danny
Howat and Paul Cummings.
UNC's top recruit, Johan Boakes,
will not compete. The newcomer

third in the 1,500-meter run at the

Royer was attracted to UNC
because of the chance to play, and
was, in fact, able to start his fresh
man year. The experience was not
an easy one. "What excited me
(about UNC) was an opportunity to
start for four years," he said. "Start
ing as a freshman is hard, especially
playing goalie. I think there is a lot
of added pressure at that position."
As for this year, Royer said that
he felt good about the team's per
formance so far, and added that he
thought the Tar Heels could go far
if they can maintain their recent level
Royer's team goals include an
ACC championship and an NCAA
bid. As for himself, he has set a major
personal goal. "Within the next
couple of years," he said, "I'd like
to be considered the best goalie in
