Spectator Publications to the Arts & Sciences Foundation of the : ; " - - most was that the team really started to communicate, assistant coach Jolene Nagel said. ' The Tar Heels shook off the inconsistencies that plagued some of their opening games and proved that they are indeed capable of playing solid volleyball. In the first match Friday after noon, North Carolina defeated George Washington at N.C. State, 15-9, 15-9, 5-15, 16-14. This was the Tar Heels weakest match of the weekend, but although they couldn't hang on to win in the third game, they battled George Washington's strong comeback attempt by taking the fourth game to win the match. The team proved it had the mental toughness to get ahead of a team and stay ahead by thwarting any serious challenges. Friday afternoon's strong perfor mance obviously gave UNC a lot of confidence for Friday night's match. The Tar Heels seemed to gain more composure with every game as they silenced Virginia Commonwealth 1 5-1 0, 1 5-9, 1 5-5. A key to the victory was the outstanding play by captain Jill Berkebile. Berkebile, a senior from Johnstown, Pa., continues to play well on a consistent basis for the Tar Heels. After winning two on Friday, North Carolina came back strong Saturday. In the first match, UNC n of Peace, War 6V Defense of the University of and Spectator Publications present: Winston Church! British Intelligence til r s,Ss v. Although they won the match in three straight, the Tar Heels were not taking the victory for granted. "In volleyball, any team can win on a given day," Nagel said. uYou never really know what outcome to expect. That is why each win is so important. Knowing the significance of each victory, UNC added another when it overtook Virginia Tech handily for its fourth consecutive win, 15-6, 15 6, 15-1. North Carolina didn't have any trouble in this final game as the offense and defense came together for three quick and sucessful games. With the four wins gained over the weekend, UNC upped its record to 7-3. "We are really happy with the way the team played, Nagel said. "We started to make necessary adjustments and as a result we got stronger through each game. These games were a good test for us. The Tar Heels' next match will be a home conference game against Duke, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Adding to the excitement will be a contest for a free trip to New York sponsored by Continental Travel.
