6The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, September 25, 1986 i :UNC soccer starts Gamecocks out, 1-0 By GREG COOK Staff Writer The UNC men's soccer team, sparked by junior Tommy Nichol son's goal with 4:25 left in the match, pulled off a stunning 1-0 upset of third-ranked South Carolina Wednesday. The goal came after an intense, hard-fought battle by both teams. David Smyth made a pass from the sideline to the midfield area. Fresh man Chad Ashton took Smyth's pass and fed Nicholson, who was break ing down the center of the midfield. Nicholson ripped a shot by the diving Gamecock goaltender for the only tally of the match. Nicholson attributed his goal to superior teamwork. "Everybody did the right thing at the right time," he said. "I made a good run and Chad (Ashton) made a great pass." UNC Coach Anson Dorrance pointed to good defense and an overall aggressive style of play as keys in the Tar Heel victory. "1 really don't think the score indicated the way we played. We created chance after chance and it eventually paid off for us," Dorrance said. "It was a fantastic win for our program. South Carolina is ranked third in the nation, but I dont think they were expecting us to be as good as we actually are." South Carolina head coach Mark Berson, a 1975 UNC graduate and Tar Heel soccer alumnus, credited UNC's aggressiveness and quickness as the match's deciding factors. "We consistently got beat to the ball at all points of the field," Berson said. "We simply were outplayed from the opening whistle to the closing whistle. I have to give North Carolina tremendous credit, how ever. They are an extremely well coached team and they proved it Sports Ust Graduation Rates of Football Players 1986 - 41.67c (617 of 1,483) 1985 - 44.87c (597 of 1,333) 1984 47.7 (573 of 1,202) 1983 43.4 (529 of 1,218) 1982 46.4 (562 of 1,211) For student-athletes receiving finan cial aid over 5-year period - r. UNC sophomore goalie Brad Davis played his second game of the year against the Gamecocks after holding Amer ican University scoreless in his previous start. The defensive credit in this match, however, went not only to Davis but also to three-year letterman and senior Frank Gilhooly. "Gilhooly is one player 1 have to single out," Dorrance said. "He set up our defense and was our leader out there on the field." Gilhooly said persistance paid dividends for the Tar Heels. "We proved that we can beat anybody if we play as hard as we can for a full 90 minutes," Gilhooly said. "1 firmly believe that we have the greatest defensive athletes in ACC soccer. (Donald) Cogsville is especially tough and aggressive, as is our entire midfield." UNC, despite four tempting scor ing chances, could not capitaliize in the first half of play. At the 32:30 mark of the first half, freshman Marc Buffin worked his way through the Gamecock defense within yards of the goal and got off a shot. The blast, however, was blocked, thus squash ing the first serious scoring threat of the match. With 1:30 left in the first half, Tar Heel Mark Devey moved to the middle of the field and let fly a 30 yard shot which was also deflected away. South Carolina had two real threats in the half. Davis made a fine save on the first, and the second flew over the top of the goal. The Gamecocks mounted their most serious attack with 18:21 mark of the second half. Senior Ami Arnthorsson sliced through the UNC defense and booted an attempt which rang off the left goal post, thereby preserving Davis' shutout and setting the stage for Nicholson's heroics. The junior's goal lifted UNC to a 6-3 record and dropped South Carolina to 7-2. To set the game in historical context, the Tar Heel victory was probably the biggest UNC win since its 1983 upset of top ranked Duke. Ironically enough, the Tar Heels won that match 1-0 as well, although the contest did go to overtime. BWIA All-time defensive best a formidable crew Editor's note: This article selecting the best UNC defensive team of all time is the first of a two-part series. Tomorrow, the top UNC offense will he selected by position. By MIKE BERARDINO Assistant Sports Editor In our never-ending effort to keep you, the faithful DTH reader, constantly entertained, we on the "Killer Sports Staff of the Eighties" proudly present a delightful and nostalgic look at the greatest players in North Carolina football lore. What if, one of our crack sportsw riters asked a few weeks ago in the true Hewlett-Packard spirit, we racked our collective brains and picked an All-Time, All-Star UNC football dream team that would span the eras and make all of us feel good inside? Here, submitted for your appro val, is the official, DTH-sanctioned compilation of the most fearsome, gruesome and awesome group of defenders ever to don the Carolina Blue and White. But before we begin, lend me your attention and 111 cite you two simple ground rules. First, the contest is open to any UNC player, past or present, although no current Tar Heel made the defensive unit. Second, the player must have been selected either All-ACC, All Southern conference, or Ail American by somebody at some point. In our 3-4 defensive setup (chosen because UNC is the Linebacker U. of the South), the starting left end will be Andy Bershak, Class of 1937. Bershak was a two-way terror for coach Ray Wolf and the co-captain of the Tar Heel team that went 7-1-1 in his senior season, posting five shutouts along the way. The right end is Dee Hardison from the Class of 1977. Hardison captained the defense and was named All-American at the tackle spot by the Associated Press in his senior year. Well put the sturdy New York Giant on the outside, though, because of his inherent quickness. Our nose guard? How about William Fuller, an All-American according to several polls in both 1982 and 1983? Even the greatest fantasy offense devised by the most fertile mind would have trouble getting by the aforementioned defensive line of doom. But if they somehow did, oh what a corps of linebackers would be lying in wait! The right outside linebacker spot belongs to the incomparable "LT" himself. Yes, Lawrence Taylor will go down in history as the greatest defensive player ever to toil in Chapel Hill. The current New York Giants star, who will forever be remembered as the "Man Who Ended Joe Theismann's Career," was a consensus All-American and ACC Player of the Year in 1980 as the leader of Dick Crum's 11-1 squad. Since moving on to the pros, Taylor has annually been an All-Pro selec tion and won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award several times. Mike Wilcher is the other outside linebacker. An All-ACC pick in 1982, Wilcher has blossomed as a professional with the Los Angeles Rams. Now mentioned in the same breath with the Taylors, the -Hugh Greens and the Mike Singletarys of the league, Wilcher is our choice to join Sir Lawrence as a linebacking bookend. On the inside, ( we have John Bunting and Chris Hanburger. Bunting, an All-ACC choice on the 1971 team that went 9-3 and crushed Duke 38-0 in the regular-season finale, became one of the NFL's premier backers for the next decade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Hanburger, interestingly enough, was a two-time all-conference selec tion as a center in the early 1960's. As a pro, however, he played line backer for the Washington Redskins and was the leader of George Allen's "Over The Hill Gang" until his retirement in 1978. The pass defense would be just as impenetrable. At the cornerback spots, we have Lou Angelo and Steve Streater. Angelo, chosen All-ACC in 1972 when he led the conference with eight interceptions, still holds the UNC career records for pickoffs with (51? iathj Star BppI Theta Chi fraternity informal rush meeting Monday, Sept. 29 at 7.30 PM and Wed. As the sole standard bearer of excellence during a forgettable time for North Carolina football, Daven port makes our team. Severin, an AP All-American in both 1939 and 1940 at end, gets the nod at an unfamiliar position because of a legendary tackle made in UNC's 6-3 upset of Duke in 1940. But Severin ran Lach down from behind to prevent a score, save the game for UNC and, most importantly, win a spot on the DTH's all-time Tar Heel team. Every team needs a punter and ours is Harry Dunkle. This kicking wonderkind of the 1939-1941 period was truly outstanding. He wasnt named All-American or even All ACC, but he should have been.
