Friends and foes support absent Driesell

basketball players and coaches, in a
state of limbo as the ACC basketball
season looms nearer, expressed
support for embattled coach Lefty
Driesell Sunday in the wake of
reports that Driesell may accept a
$1 million contract buyout pact from
the university.
"If they make a mistake and fire
him, it will be the biggest mistake
of their lives," said Maryland assist
ant coach Jeff Adkins. "He hasn't
broken any rules. He's won games
and made money for the University
of Maryland."
Two Maryland players said a
player boycott was a very real
possibility if Driesell didn't return as
coach. "If Lefty was to leave, I'm
not sure we would have enough
players left to play,." said junior
forward Derrick Lewis. "It would be
like a boycott. It would be hard to

Senior guard Keith Gatlin, one of
the Maryland players who shared a
room with Len Bias before Bias'
cocaine-induced death June 19,
agreed with his teammate. "1 don't
think canceling the season would
even be a bad idea." he said. "My
knee's hurt anyway, and if (Driesell)
leaves 1 may very likely be redshirted
this season."
The Maryland comments came
one day after The Washington Post
reported that Driesell had been
offered a million-dollar deal if he
would step down as coach and take
a newly-created administrative posi
tion. The coach has taken much of
the blame for Bias' death after
revelations that Maryland basketball
players missed about 40 percent of
their classes last basketball season.
Bias also did not pass a single course
during the spring semester of his
senior year.
Sunday marked the first time in
18 years that Driesell had missed the
traditional press day called "Oper
ation Basketball," and Georgia Tech
coach Bobby Cremins took that as
a sign that the coach would not be
back. "1 was disappointed not to see
Lefty here, and 1 guess that's a good
indication of what is to come," he
said. "From a coaching standpoint,
I feel for Lefty. It's a very, very

the ACC coaches when he said
Driesell should not be targeted as
a scapegoat because of Bias' death.
"I believe what happened to Bias
could happen anywhere," he said.
"And if you don't believe that, you're
not living in the real world."
As a partial solution to Mary
land's academic woes, the university
has canceled two of the Terps' games
and postponed several others until
the spring semester, a move that was
roundly criticized.
"They canceled those games in the
first semester, for what I don't
know," Lewis said. "Now well just
be playing three games a week in
January. If you want to concentrate
on academics, why not cancel the
whole season? I wouldn't mind it."
Virginia coach Terry Holland,
who played under Driesell at David
son, also disagreed with the schedul
ing changes. "That certainly isn't the
answer." he said. "Marvland wasn't

that he's a win-at-all-costs coach,

The Maryland team has had little
time to think about basketball, and
has not even begun practice yet. All
other teams started Oct. 15, but the
Terps won't begin until Nov. 1 in
another effort to improve the team's
academic climate. "We've been put
in a state of limbo," Adkins said.
"They should have made a quicker
decision. The players need to be
playing and concentrating on the
court."
Instead, the players continue to be
scrutinized closely by an ever-hungry
press. "Most of the time we just stay
in the room now," Gatlin said.
"Maryland is not a good place to
be right now. Everyone thinks we're
all on drugs, and we weren't involved
in it."

Next, North Carolina must pre
pare for a home game against
Maryland, the defending ACC
champions. Left tackle Harris Bar
ton probably spoke for the entire
UNC squad when he said, "It's
tough, but we have to regroup. If
we look within ourselves, we can
regain our confidence. We're just
going to have to forget this game
and move on."
