Fashion experts hang up doubts about what's hot for fall
By JESSICA BROOKS
The problem: trying to get as
many wardrobes as possible out of
a few articles of clothing.
This fall's answer, according to
fashion experts, is the oversized
sweater for women and the navy
blazer for men.
Barbara Shane, who works at
Separate Quarters, said oversized
cotton-knit sweaters are practical
and in vogue this fall. "Oversized
sweaters can be casual or dressy
depending on what you put with
them," she said.
On the casual side, an oversized
sweater with baggy pants or a pair
of leggings is the way to go, Shane
said. At Separate Quarters, over
sized sweaters range from $80 to

Black is very popular and a good
wardrobe builder, according to
Shane. "Sometimes it's hard to get
away from how good black is."
Angela Robbins of Benetton on
Franklin Street agreed. "You should
start with basic colors, like some
thing you already have accessories
for." She also advises customers to
"start with something neutral and
Robbins said oversized sweaters,
starting at $48, are also popular at
Benetton. "Mohair sweater-skirt sets
are really big as well," said Robbins.
The price at Benetton is $120 a set.

Pamela Starkey, a freshman from Raleigh, shows off the casual, big sweater look

However, Shane said Separate
Quarters employees do not usually
use color analysis when choosing
wardrobes for their customers.
"Ill try anything as long as people
are open to it," Robbins said. "We
have a lot of bright colors here and
we just try to go with what the
Allan Cole of The Hub has a more
color-oriented way of picking out
clothes for the men that shop there.
"I usually put colors up against a
customer's face to see what matches
the best." In determining what colors
look good, skin tone is more impor
tant than hair color, Cole said. "Hair
color is not a major factor."
With one pair of pants, one blazer,
two shirts and three ties. Cole said,
a customer can get up to 10 outfits.
A versatile outfit from The Hub
starts with a pair of charcoal-gray
pants and a navy-blue blazer,
according to Cole. "Blue and gray
do not limit your other colors," he
After the pants and blazer come
the shirts and ties. "Always a white
shirt when you're going dressy," said
Cole. The dressy tie can be red,,
yellow or mauve. On the other hand,
Cole suggests a blue shirt and a red
tie for the casual look.
This combination of clothing
comes to a total of $375. Cole said
the price is a good one considering
"you're getting quality clothing. It's
going to last for a long time."
But what is the one essential article
of clothing that every wardrobe
should have? According to Shane,
a cotton flannel dress is perfect for
women. "You never have to worry
about what goes with it. Just throw
it on and go," she said.
Robbins' idea of one basic essen
tial is a little more versatile. She said
every woman should have "some

A navy blazer is a man's safest
bet, according to Cole. "A blue
blazer is classic, versatile and basic,"
But wearability counts above most
other wardrobe considerations,
Shane said. Her advice to the
fashion-conscious college student is,
"Fashion should be comfortable
more than anything else. Dress that
feels good, looks good."
