Campus Y. sponsors 'fund rum9

The Campus Y is sponsoring
the eighth annual Footfalls road
race, featuring a 10-kilometer (6.2
mile) run Sunday, Nov. 2 at UNC.
At least 300 runners from
across the state are expected to
participate in the event, certified
by the state association of The
Athletic Congress.
Claudia Viveros said that for
the less-avid athletes who enjoy
running, there is a 2-mile fun run
to begin at 2 p.m. in front of the
Campus Y Building on Cameron
Avenue. The course will proceed
down Country Club Road, circle
Gimghoul Road and return on
Country Club to Cameron.
Proceeds will go to the Campus
Y to support its current programs,
including the Big Buddy Pro
gram, Freshman Camp, Walk for
Humanity and Human Rights
Week. They hope to raise $2,500
through the event, Viveros said.
Because enough people in
Chapel Hill have running expe
rience, the Campus Y also spon
sors the 10-kilometer road race
which starts at 2:30 p.m. This
course begins at Campus Y, goes
down Country Club Road, then
along Laurel Hill and Mason
Farm and roads to Finley Golf
Course. Runners will then take
Manning Drive to Ridge and
South roads to the finish line on
Columbia Street.
The Athletic Congress certifies
the race so that the Campus Y
abides by certain rules, Viveros
said. "The runners will be more
willing to -run if the race is
certified," sne said.
The entry fee for the 10-k is
$6 before Oct. 3 1 and $8 after that
date for individuals, and $30 for
teams. The fun run entry fee is
$3.
Free T-shirts will be given to
the first 300 registered road race
participants. Trophies will be
awarded to the top men's and and
women's overall finishers, and top
age-group category winners will
receive a prize.
Applications are now available
at the Campus Y, Student Union,
Chase Hall, Granville Towers,
UNC intramural offices and
Duke and N.C. State universities.

Kenan Center opens
The new $8 million Kenan Center for Private Enter
prise (above) officially opened its doors over fall break.
The center, located on South Campus next to the
Smith Center, will bring businesses and the academic
community together. The Institute for Private Enter
prise, which until now was in Carroll Hall, will use the
center to match people with new ideas for business
with possible financial backers. Most of its focus is
national, but many of its programs will benefit the
students, according to university officials. Inset picture
