6The Daily Tar HeelMonday, November 3, 1986 'Night Music' has a unique ring, but falls flat from weak acting ; When attending a Stephen Sond heim musical, one must realize in advance that it will be no "Okla homa!" Unique music and style, not plot, distinguish Sondheim works such as A Little Night Music the musical that the Opera Carolina performed Thursday night in Memorial Hall. The show was the first theater offering of the Carolina Union's Performing Arts Series. The story is set in turn-of-the-century Sweden. The plot revolves around the chance meeting of two old lovers, one a celebrated actress named Desiree Armfeldt (Patrice Munsel) and the other a recently remarried lawyer named Fredrik !Egerman (William McDonald) who is attempting to reclaim his youth with his 18-year-old bride. Henrik, Fredrik's 20-year-old divinity stu dent son, is meanwhile madly in love with his new stepmother. Desiree is having an affair with a macho count. In the end, youth gets youth, and the old lovers happily unite. Opera Carolina (formerly the North Carolina Opera) has assembled a fairly illustrious cast. Munsel, the youngest singer ever to debut at the Metropolitan Opera, gave an outstanding performance. She and Callman held the show together with their fine acting and singing. Much of the rest of the cast per formed passably but lacked the essential dynamic energy of these two New York veterans. Overall, the performers voices were well-trained, and the musical direction was quite good. However, the essential lack of basic acting skill hurt the performance immensely. . The most familiar song from Night Music is "Send in the Clowns," which Judy Collins popularized in the mid 70s. But the well-known tune is hardly the best in the production. Based on the music and quality of his productions, Sondheim's works are simply more sophisticated than most of the genre. They are perhaps even more sophisticated than those of Andrew Lloyd Weber and company, such as (Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats. They are, like red wine, an acquired taste. tian Fellowship is sponsor ing a lecture by John Scott on "Developing the Chris tian Mind" in Gerrard Hall. We will be Consultant helps B CC to take root By JEAN LUTES Assistant University Editor UNC's proposed Black Cultural Center will benefit white students as much as black students, said a Florida State University professor who was on campus Friday to consult with BCC Planning Com mittee members. William Jones, director of FSU's Afro-American studies program, met individually with committee members. He will submit a report in a few weeks evaluating the committee's progress and suggesting ways to finalize plans for the center. Boulton said that Jones, who has 20 years experience with black cultural programs, was paid for his consulting services, but he declined to say how much. Jones helped the planning com mittee focus on specific plans, such as the search for a director to guide and develop the center's programs, Boulton said. "For research institutions, direc tors of cultural units should be individuals who are peers to their colleagues," Jones said in an inter view Friday. Because of this, the director should serve as both a member of the faculty and supervisor for the center. The University needs the center to fulfill its stated goals of scholarly objectivity, Jones said. Today, 7:30, Hanes Art Center lecture hall. Sponsored by Students Taking Action for Nuclear Disarmament has been instituted in the past is deficient," he said. The center would correct this deficiency by exposing students to the black expe rience. Boulton said he viewed the center's development as a long-term commitment, and he said he wanted to proceed carefully to ensure its success. "I hope we will get the roots planted in the University, so it will grow slowly and firmly." Although it's too early to tell how much the center would cost, Boulton estimated initial costs at about $150,000. That includes start-up funds, salaries, construction funds and program money, he said. While the Center would help white students understand Afro-American experiences, it also would give black students a special place to grow, Jones said. "A Black Cultural Center also provides a place . . . where minority students can feel comfortable that their humanity is being respected, if not admired," he said. "And it assists, if not compels, other students to recognize their concerns." Jones declined to elaborate on his discussions with planning committee members, saying he wanted time to fully consider what they had told him. "The Black Cultural Center plays an indispensable role in bringing about what I take to be the ideal in education a pluralistic or multicultural modeL," Jones said.
