Vast experience teaches student Junior Anne Davidson is a shaper of the news. Literally. As co-producer of STV's video yearbook, she spends about six hours a week capturing campus colors, happenings and craziness on videotape. "It's really a lot of fun. It's a learning process," the English and art history major says. And she does all of this camera work and editing because she says it gives her "a chance to see all aspects of student life." . But it seems that Davidson, who is also co-chairwoman for the Cam pus Y Women's Forum and scho larship chairwoman for her sorority, doesn't need to see campus activities; she has done them. Name an organization and chan ces are pretty good that she has been involved in it. She has been a residence-hall floor senator, a pub licity chairwoman in Student Government and a member of the Union film committee. Each year she attempts "to try Kcrihy Potars Campus Personality something different," and thinks of her extracurriculars as out-of-class learning experiences. In high school, she was so active that she left feeling burnt out after her senior year. She was on the newspaper and yearbook staffs, the chairman of the Keyettes, the cross country team captain and a member of the soccer, swimming and track teams. Currently, her work with STV and the Women's Forum is keeping her busy. As co-chairwoman of the Forum, she leads its weekly Monday-night meetings, plans its projects and helps its 15-plus members gain their purpose educating both women and men about women's issues. "The Women's Forum has given me a good chance to learn about women. We try to encourage women V Xlyf J W , - v - v ; r p IT w-'f 4 DTH Larry Childress Anne Davidson displays project for Women's Forum to take a chance on opportunity and learn what they can achieve," David son said. Davidson's interest in women's issues and her disappointment at the lack of women leaders on UNC's campus led her to chair the forum. When she came from Longmeadow, Mass., her freshman year, Davidson noticed that women in the South were treated differently than they were in the North. "In the South, more emphasis is on appearance and courtesy. In the North, there is more emphasis on getting a job. It's more of a neccessity for both women and men to work. Girls had always been treated the same as guys (in my high school). Here they aren." She said that she and the other members of the committee share a common interest they want women to be aware, to succeed and to overcome stereotypes. "There is a lot of prejudice there and a lot of women don't know that," she said. ( Davidson said she noticed preju dice two summers ago when she worked as a secretary-clerk for a hospital in Massachusetts. Although she can't pinpoint an incident in which she was discriminated against, she says prejudice was something "you could feel" in the hospital's atmosphere. And the Women's Forum is trying to change those attitudes. Among other plans, there is a rape seminar for men in the works. The time demands of her Campus Y and STV positions have forced her to organize, scheduling her time down to the minute. "I only do one thing at a time. Fear is another good thing, as far as studying goes I don't like to have things hanging over my head. I like to know what is coming up." Sometimes she can't fit her club activities, her job at the Undergrad uate Library and her studies all in. What then? "Many, many late nights" are her alternative. She also has learned to cope by setting priorities and realizing her limits. "You have to take things in perspective. You try to get things done and if they're not, they will be." But Davidson says leadership positions have helped her focus her energy on just a few activities a year and to attend all those organizations' meetings. "IVe learned a lot about myself. IVe learned I cant do everything and IVe tried!" She says her campus involvement has also helped her make the decision to go to law school and have a career either in government or television. "IVe learned what I would like to do. If I hadnt tried STV, I wouldn't know I liked it." From someone who describes herself as a "big involvement person" come words of advice for getting active on campus: "Go ahead and do it and take the initiative, because organizations need members and because what you learn and the people you meet and the friends you make are there. There are so many rewards when you are active." THERE ARE TWO SIDES TO COMING A NURSE IN THE ARMY. And they're loth repre sented by the insignia you wear as a member of the Army Nurse Corps.
