After all, Mark Maye, Derrick Fennerand Eric Streater all had standout days against Maryland. But it was Barton, an all conference tackle, who was forced to move to center for 38 plays during the game and performed brilliantly. Barton played in all 103 snaps for the Tar Heels Saturday, and has been the acknowledged leader of the offensive line corps all season in both words and action, as Lee Gliarmis (see press conference article) will attest. Barton also received recognition last week, being selected as one of the NFL Foundation and Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes for 1986. A good week, Harris, or as you would say, "An exuberantly acute, raptu rous performance." J - - I t " Harris Barton Sports List The Cost of Dressing a College Football Player 1 . Volleyball takes AC C toy beating State By PHYLLIS A. FAIR Staff Writer Anybody who spent Tuesday night sitting behind a television set watching the election returns instead of in Carmichael Auditorium missed a night full of thrills, chills-and more spine-tingling excitement than a James Bond movie. The UNC volleyball team defeated N.C. State 15-12, 15-2, 12-15, 13-15 and 15-10, before a vocal Carmichael crowd and clinched the regular season ACC title. The Tar Heels went into Tuesday's night match with a 6-0 conference record knowing that in order to take the title they had to defeat State. We know we have to beat them," assistant coach Kevin Kirk said before the match. "It's going to be a dog fight, and it's going to take five games." Both squads saw their fair shares of lead changes and ties throughout the entire match. In the first game of the match UNC saw sophomore Andrea Wells spiking from the left and from the right. One minute she wasn't there and the next she was, attacking like a phantom but scoring like a machine. She had 25 kills on the night. In a match that could have gone either way UNC had some key plays not only from the phantom but also from the entire offense, which played with a higher confidence level and with more maturity than it has most of the season. There were times throughout the match when UNC played like a team consisting of upperclassmen rather than underclassmen. THe balancing act of the first game gave way to a UNC-dominated second game in which the Tar Heels took control of the ccurt. UNC rolled to an early 6-1 lead in game two, when the State coach decided it was time to call a timeout. The timeout didn't work, because not long after UNC took the game, with State scoring just two points. With a two game lead the third seemed like a minor technicality, but that was not the case. The Tar Heels confidence level and maturity went right out the window along with the the next two games. UNC's biggest point deficit came in game four when the Wolfpack took an 6-0 lead. The Tar Heels tried to make a late game comeback and came within one at 13-12, but fell just short. The problems in the third and fourth games, according to assistant coach Jolene Nagel, were that the passes were lower, and the setter wasn't able to run the offense like she should have. "We were giving them easy balls, and we became very pensive." One might have expected UNC to crack in the final game, but the Tar Heels rode a solid defense to the win and the ACC title. Wells had six spikes in the game, and UNC returned to the discipline which gave them the first two games. The supermarket with fflD nnnnnnnr PRICES EFFECTIVE THRU SAT., NOV.
