4The Daily Tar HeelThursday, November 6, 1986 Field hockey high-scorer sticks to the task at hand By DILL SHAW Staff Writer ; She's competitive, team-oriented and optimistic. She's senior field hcxikey forward Maryellen Falcone and she's using these attributes to help North Carolina's top-ranked team attain a 1986 national championship. With 32 career points, Falcone has captured sixth place among UNC's all-time scoring leaders. Impressive statistics and recognition, however, mean little to her. Her personal aspirations emphasize success of the team. "I'd like to make an ACC or All American team," she admitted."But I'd rather work for us to be No. 1 than work for myself. I'm here to do the best for the team." Falcone's preference for team instead of individual sport prompted field hockey participation at her junior high school in Trumbull, Ct. lt was the only team sport offered just to women in the fall," explained Falcone. After four years of high school play and recognition as the New York Daily News field hockey Player of the Year, Falcone chose to attend UNC for its top-notch athletic and academic programs. Torn knee ligaments the summer before attend ing altered her plans to play univer sity field hockey. Surgery, crutches, and rehabilation were components of a frustrating five-month recovery period. Optimism put Falcone back into competition by January. Despite the frustrating setback, she still speaks positively. "My knee doesn't straighten all the way, but it's the best it's going to be. YouVe got to take what you have, so IH take it." In 1985, 11 regular-season goals and advancement to level B of the summer developmental camps proved that she had lost little of her characteristic speed. In front of the net, Falcone rebounded and deflected the ball to produce four game-winning scores for the Tar Heels. "I like to make other people happy. If there was a choice between myself and someone else, I would choose them." Playing in only her third year of athletic eligibility, the academic senior will have to decide by season's end if UNC field hockey is in her future. Coach Karen Shelton will be a factor."She's basically gotten me where I am," said the senior. "I very much look up to her. If Karen wanted me to stay, I would do that." Otherwise, Falcone's feelings are mixed. "There are times when we are running sprints or working hard and I think, There is no way I'm coming back.' But after we win a game I think 'God, I'd love to do this again.' " "If we win a national champion ship there is a 99 percent chance I won't be back. It's like gambling. If you win big, you quit. I'd like to go out on top. You can't beat that."
