Petition to measure support
for legisture-funded projects
By TOM CAMP
Staff Writer
Student Government has started
a petition drive to protest future
tuition hikes and encourage
legislatively-approved funds for the
handicapped. Student Body Presi
dent Bryan H asset said Monday.
The petition drive, in the Pit from
1 1 a.m. until I p.m. this week, will
help University lobbying efforts in
the spring, H asset said. Also, it is
a good way to recruit students who
want to get involved in campus issues
next semester, he said.
With Gov. Jim Martin and leg
islators proposing tuition hikes
across the board in the 16 UNC
system schools. Student Govern
ment is working to make sure that
the school is accessible to as many

people as possible, he said.
The second petition issue is to
encourage legislators to allocate
barrier-removal funds, which would
go to projects like ramps and
elevators for wheelchair-bound
students.
Legislators last approved funds
for similar projects in 1982, Hassel
said. "A lot of the cheap things have
been done, like curb cuts (the small
ramps in sidewalks at intersections),
but we still need the elevators,
electric door openers and dormitory
ramps," he said. UNC's Board of
Governors has requested $5.9 mil
lion for barrier-removal funds,
Hassel said, and Student Govern
ment would like to see that money
approved.
