4The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, November 20, 1986 Volleyball top seed in ACC tournament By LORNA KHALIL Stff Writer '. The UNC women's volleyball 'team is gearing up for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, 'which begin tonight at N.C. State's Carmichael Gymnasium. ' .The Tar Heels will be trying to uphold a tradition of dominance in the ACC when it heads to Raleigh for its first game of the tournament at 1 p.m. Friday. North Carolina won the first four conference titles arid has finished second in the past two championships, losing to N.C. State in 1984 and Duke in 1985. The Tar Heels will be trying to gain a bid in the NCAA tournament with an ACC championship, which is the only way a conference team can qualify. Top-seeded UNC will play No. 8 Georgia Tech in its first game. UNC earned its No. 1 ranking by estab lishing itself as the conference's regular-season champion with a perfect 7-0 record. N.C. State will be seeded second w ith Duke ranking third. Both teams should pose a strong challenge for the Tar Heels. A win in the opening round will mean that UNC will play the winner of the Clemson-Maryland match at 6 p.m. Saturday evening. If the Tar Heels can win their second match, they'll move into the championship match which begins at 2 p.m. Sunday. Contrary to the previous year when UNC was left with just six healthy players to finish the season, North Carolina has a strong lineup going into this year's championship. German has been reha bilitating and taking it easy in practices in order to be ready for the tournament. In addition to German, the Tar Heels have outstanding players in seniors Dawn Wood and Jill Ber kebile. Wood currently leads UNC in solo blocks, block assists and in hitting percentage. Berkebile leads the team in defensive saves, and is ranked 12th nationally in the cate gory, with a 3.79 average. Another key player for North Carolina is sophomore sensation Sherri Vogel. Vogel was currently ranked 1 7th nationally in assists and has a 11.41 average per game. Both Vogel and Berkebile have attained ACC Player-of-the-Week honors earlier this year. Another key performer for the Tar Heels is sophomore Andrea Wells. Wells is an amazing spiker who possesses intimidating power and extremely fast arm swing. She currently leads UNC in total kills with 475. Rounding out this year's confer ence team are sophomore Ann Schildmeyer and 6-0 freshman Lisa Joffs. Schildmeyer is tops among the Tar Heels in service aces this year with 45. Joffs is a versatile player, playing setter, hitter or blocker. Is the team from North Carolina nervous about being the top seed? "We're in a good position being seeded No.l, " Berkebile said. "Everyone is really confident because we're 7-0, but we're not taking the tournament too lightly."
