The Daily Tar HeelWednesday, January 7, 19875 .. . . . . . - - - S9)cg)(fyg ; - 3oop wim octet off ;ame over By SCOTT FOWLER Sports Editor Eight games, eight wins. North Carolina was perfect over break, defeating two teams in the top 10, surviving a scare from SMU and emerging from Christmas break with an I I-l record and a No. 2 or No. 3 ranking in the country, depending on what poll you're looking at. The team's only real casualty over its extremely successful break has been Joe Wolf, who suffered a strained back in the late stages of the overtime victory at SMU and missed the La Salle game. MJoe has improved, but he's not ready to play yet," said UNC trainer Marc Davis. He could be back for the Maryland game Thursday night, but we won't know until later in the week." To bring you up to date on the team's doings over break, here's a short summary about each game that has been played since classes ended for the fall semester. The La Salle game story can be found elsewhere on the sports page. UNC 122, Miami 77 Dec. 6 Chapel Hill: The Tar Heels pounded Miami by 45 points in a game that wasn't even that close. Wolf led the Tar Heels with 23 points and 14 rebounds in only 20 minutes of play, while Ranzino Smith scored 21 points and Scott Williams con tributed 14. North Carolina set a team record with 72 points in the first half alone, and dominated a Miami team that had not yet acquired the services of frequent flyer Tito Horford. Kenny Smith dished out 13 assists. UNC 98, Jacksonville 69 Dec. 13 Chapel Hill: The Tar Heels routed their third straight Florida team (Stetson was the first), as Wolf and the surprising Dave Popson combined for 40 points inside. Wolf had 21 points and eight rebounds, Popson had 19 and Kenny Smith also had 19. Jeff Lebo was also in double figures for the Tar Heels with 12 points as the team showed no ill effects from a week oi taxing exams. UNC 90v Illinois 77 " 7 ; Dec. 20 Chapel Hill: In what ' was arguably the biggest win over the break, UNC went on a late spurt to stymie the Illini. The Tar Heel defense held Fighting Illini guard Doug Altenberger to 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting, but were hurt repeatedly by the strong inside moves of forward Ken Norman, who scored 22 points and pulled down AP Top 20 1. UNC took a 1 2-point lead at halftime and didn't let it get any closer before a crowd that wasn't a sellout, even with some $6 seats available. Reid played perhaps his best game so far, clearing the boards for 12 rebounds. The Tar Heels shot 57.4 percent for the game, compared to Purdue's 41 percent. UNC 88, SMU 86 (OT) t. Jeff Lebo keyed a sluggish UNC team with 22 points, drilling six of his 12 three-pointers, as the Tar Heels outscored the Mustangs 7-5 in overtime for the win. Johnson Heels loiock By BOB YOUNG Assistant Sports Editor PHILADELPHIA After the white-knuckle game against SMU at the Dallas Morning News Tourna ment, and before diving into, the depths of its ACC conference sche dule, the UNC basketball team needed a breather. The Tar Heels, without the services of Joe Wolf, wanted a game to regroup. They were La Sallivating for a pushover. No luck. UNC went into the Palestra Saturday night hoping to roll over the Explorers of La Salle, but Coach Dean Smith and his troops barely La Sallvaged their top five ranking, scoring the game's last 10 points to eke out a 79-72 win. "To win on the road without Joe Wolf is very gratifying,' Smith said. Not just on the road, but in the Palestra the most hallowed of collegiate hoops halls. More college games have been played on the 60-year-old central Philly hardwood than any other arena in the country. "It's a great facility, but I think they're still using the original clock," Smith said, referring to one of the electronic game clocks that was often 10 seconds slower than its clone at the other side bf the gym. Two Tar Heels more in touch with the tradition of the Palestra were Jeff Lebo and Dave Popson. Both' are natives of Pennsylvania, but neither had played the Palestra previously. "My dad (coach at Carlisle H.S.) has coached games here, but not when I was playing for him." Popson was more relieved with winning in his home state than the particulars of the court. "I guess this means I can come back home if I want to," he said. Fittingly, UNC's sons of Pennsyl vania carried their team to the win over La Salle. Popson kept the Tar Heels close in the first half with a team-high 1 1 points and Lebo scored eight of his team's first 16 points in the second half as UNC went from a 39-38 halftime deficit to a 54-50 lead with 13:22 remaining. But La Salle, led by the hot shooting of Tim Legler, came back on the floor after a timeout and outscored UNC 13-3. For the squad in blue, it was PTPP (Prime Time Pennsylvania Player) time. Popson and Lebo, along with Kenny Smith, responded by scoring 20 of UNC's last 22 points. The key crunch-time contribu tions were a Popson dunk and two Lebo free throws (after drawing a charge, of course) gave UNC a 73 72 lead after being down 72-69. Kenny Smith iced the victory with a jumpshot, two free throws and a game-ending dunk. AS 1&WJ AS IN QUANTITY (horizontal negative only) Vbur favorite photo highlights the calendar all year round.
