or-" The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, January 14, 19875 Fencing makes grade at MIT tourney J.R-. "goes. home to-Wahooville By BOD YOUNG Assistant Sports Editor And all the Wahoosin Wahooville even little Cindy Lu Wahoo, who was no more than two stood in Wahoo Square and began to sing "Wahoo dor aw wahoo foray, wel come J. R.. J.R. Reid." Perhaps the reception given by the fans at Charlottesville's University Hall won't be quite that Seussily heartwarming for North Carolina's freshman phenom. But there is no doubt that Dean Smith will be viewed as the Grinch Who Stole J.R. when Virginia hosts the UNC bas ketball team tonight at 9 p.m (Raycom, ESPN). For Reid, the Tar Heels' leading rebounder, the game marks the first collegiate contest in his native commonwealth. And the Virginia Beach product with the Venice Beach haircut is" ready for homecoming. "1 expect IH get the same reception there as I got here," Reid said after UNC's victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium. "This will be my first time up there. IVe got a lot of friends (in Virginia)." Although the Cavaliers enter the game with a respectable record of 9-3. 1-1 in the ACC, this may be the season of what-could-have-been for Virginia. What-could-have-been, that is, if last year's leading scorer and rebounder. Olden Polynice, hadn't decided to lead the team in off-court steals. Last spring, Polynice, who would have been a senior this season, was charged with taking a set of head phones from a Charlottesville store. Coach lerry Holland suspended Polynice from the team and the 7 foot center responded by selling his services for top-lira in the Italian pro leagues. With Polynice, Virginia would have returned all 13 lettermen from last season's 19-11 team and would have been a consensus top 10 team. Without Polynice, the Cavaliers are a middle-of-the-conference club with a lot of experience. The scoring load has been picked up by 6-7 forward Andrew Kennedy and 6-3 guard Richard Morgan, both of whom average just less than 15 points a game. The rebounding chores shift to Kennedy and Tom Sheehey, who team up to grab tan average of nearly 14'$ rebounds a game. When UNC last played in Univer sity Hall, reserve guards Morgan and John Johnson came off the bench to score 25 points and lead Virginia to a 86-73 upset of the Tar Heels. who went into the Jan. 30 game with a 21-0 record and a No. I ranking. This season, UNC wanders into Wahooville with a 13-1 record (2 0 in the ACC) and a No. 3 ranking. By utilizing its depth in the froftt court North Carolina hopes to avoid giving the Wahoos (including Cindy Lu Wahoo) something to sing about. NOTE: The UNC-Virginia game marks the broadcast debut of former Maryland coach Lefty Driesell. The Lefthander got some practice in his new vocation at the UNC-Marytand and Virginia-Maryland games, so he should at least be able to expound on how the Tar Heels and Cavaliers beat his fdrmer proteges. By LAURA GRIMMER Staff Writer The North Carolina fencing team traveled to Boston this past weekend to compete in the fourth annual National Collegiate Open, hosted this year by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In the women's individual foil competition, UNC senior Nhi Le finished fourth, Cheryl Gates earned seventh place, and Lorraine Leigh and Alicia Foster placed 1 5th and 16th respectively, Mary Ronald came in 24th. The sabre team finished fourth overall. The men's individual epee had three top 16 finishers as sophomore Ravi Sawhney gained top UNC honors with the ninth place spot. Freshman Pete Farquhar and sophomore Jamal Reimer were the other Tar Heel fencers. UNC epee earned fifth place in the team competition. . In men's foil, junior Chris Kaiser was the leading Tar Heel fencer with a 17th place finish. The men's foil team rounded out the tournament with ninth place. "The men's and women's teams need a better balance of athletic ability to experience," UNC coach Rdn Miller said. "We have more raw talent than in the past, but we just don't have the level of experience to utilize it." "Our season is going to depend on how quickly and consistently we can fill that gap." In 1986, the men's team finished with an 18-2 record and the women at 16-4, and Miller was named coach of the year. V . J2t 1 , it y f; Terry Holland HDN AShleib of Hie Week J.R. Reid scored a career high 19 points against Maryland in Thursday night's win, then pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and scored 1 1 points in Saturday's thriller at Duke.
