The Daily Tar Heel Monday, January 19, 19875 J 1 Two out of three ain't bad for fencing teams By LAURA GRIMMER Staff Writer The North Carolina fencing team went two for three in Fetzer Gym this past weekend at home against Virginia, the Florida Institute of Technology and fencing super-giant Columbia. Both the men's and women's teams had impressive wins over the Cavaliers and FIT, and both met crushing defeats on the foils, epees and sabres of preseason No. I Columbia. In men's foil, the starting team of Felix Dover, Chris Kaiser, Dave Schmidt and Phil Williams was crushed by Columbia 8-1. The foilsmen recovered and defeated Virginia 7-2, but lost to FIT by a close margin. In men's epee, Ravi Sawhney, Jamal Reimer and Pete Farquhar were also handed a loss against Columbia, 8-1. The epee team came back and to whip Virginia 8-1 and narrowly downed FIT, The starting men's sabre team of Mike Vecchiolla, Karl Elmore and Paul LeBlanc was slashed by Columbia 2-7 but returned in strong form to beat Virginia and Women take From staff reports CLEMSON, S.C. Dawn Roys ter scored 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the North Carolina women's basketball team to a 98-79 win over Clemson on Saturday. Royster, a 6-foot senior center from Nyack, N.Y., also dished out a career-high seven assists in helping UNC improve to 9-5 overall and 3 2 in the ACC. Clemson dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the Sullivan sets track mark; swimmers lose Front staff reports The Tar Heel indoor track team set three school records this past weekend ii the Eastman Kodak Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn. Brad Sullivan won the collegiate 60 meter dash with an NCAA qualifying time of 6.2 seconds, and in the semifinals, set a school best by winning in 6.17.. Freshman Mia Pollard finished second in the 600-yard run with a State half, along with a couple of strictly street ball bricks. "Drummond played a good game, ahd he looked like he was in the flow," Smith said. "You try to force him into some bad shots, and I think I did. He made some tough ones, and he missed some bad ones." Bolton struggled early on, but finished with 22 points. That included a triad of three pointers and nine of 10 free throws. But ironically enough, it was Bolton who had the key miscues during the game's two jrucial stretches. The first of those stretches came midway through the first half. After a Teviin Binns follow of a Walker Lambiotte miss gave State its last lead of the game at 25-23, the Wolfpack went eight straight posses sions without scoring. Included in that run of futility was a sequence where Bolton turned the ball over, put up an airball and then turned the ball Over again. While State's engine began cough ing fitfully, the Tar Heels' was moving into high gear. Fittingly enough, it was Reid who began the run which catapulted UNC into the catbird seat, as he scored on a layup and then made both ends of a one-and-one. UNC led 27-25, and never trailed again. "J.R.'s offensive play was his best to date," Dean Smith said. "We were able to get the ball inside and he was able to to score. He did a good job ATTENTION BSN CLASS OF 1987. the Air Force has a special pro gram for 1987 BSNs. The women's team followed the trail set by the men with a loss and two big wins. Columbia, whose top-ranked woman is also the No. 1 foil fencer on the U.S. Olympic team, dealt the Tar Heels a 12-4 defeat. The starting team of Nhi Lan Le, Lorraine Leigh, Alicia Foster and Cheryl Gates were unable to overcome this handicap, coupled with the fact that Columbia's other starters are ranked among the top ten juniors in the nation. The UNC women moved on to swipe the Lady Cavaliers 12-4, and severely puncture FIT, 1 5-1. "I was a little disappointed with our performance over Colum bia," coach Ron Miller said. wWe fenced strongly but not very well. Even so, despite their top ranking, we were still aggressive and fought hard. "Overall, I'm very pleased with the team's fight and spirit," Miller said. "It's a good sign for the balance of the season." easy win conference. Four other Tar Heels reached double figures in scoring. Liza Donnell had 16 points, Tia Poindex ter 15, Kathy Wilson 12 and Marlene List 10. Also, the two-mile relay team of Johan Boakes, Dave Fuhrmann, Clive Harriott and Kyle Lowe ran 7:32.6 for sixth place and another UNC record. In other sporting action, the men's and women's swim teams both lost on the road to Clemson. The women were defeated by the sixth-ranked Tigers 156-100, while the men lost 122'2 to 94'2. from page 1 on the boards, too. This was prob ably his best performance." With five minutes to go in the half, a Kenny Smith 22-foot bomb put UNC up by 10, and the Tar Heels sprinted to a 53-38 halftime lead. Wolf scored UNC's last eight points in the surge. The Wolfpack, though, responded by coming out at halftime anxious for the open road of the transition game. Early in the half, Drummond 1 pulled up on the fastbreak and stuck a jumper to move State within nine. After Avie Lester and Joe Wolf traded inside hoops, Vinny Del Negro made a fine slashing move to spring himself for a transition layup, and Mike Giomi added a fast break basket to cut UNC's lead to seven at 61-54. Dean Smith called timeout to stem the bleeding. The Wolfpack, though, got the ball back, and had a chance to get within five. But Bolton bricked an easy layup, and Reid scored inside. ! A minute later, Kenny Smith con verted a four-point play to put the Tar Heels up by 13. From that point, UNC no longer had to glance in its rear-view mirror, as it was a Kerouac coast to the final gun. The last word on the game should belong to the man who defined it. "There aren't too many teams that can hang with us on the boards," Reid said. "And when we come out and execute and do the things we want to do, we're one of the better teams in the country." But to give a feeling of the thrills the match has provided in the past, here's a short recap of the matches fought in the last few years. 1984: The Wolfpack won the first match in Raleigh by a score of 21 12. UNC hosted the second match and won a 20-16 decision that was decided on a last-second pin in the 190-lb. weight class. 1985: In the first contest, N.C. State took advantage of its talent in the heavier weight classes to slip by the Tar Heels, 19-18. In that match, both teams were penalized one point from the final score for unsports manlike conduct. The second match was not as close, as the Wolfpack won, 25-12. 1986: UNC avenged the Wolfpack The Gold Connection says Dare to Compare We have the lowest prices in town on 14K gold & sterling silver jewelry... With 31 points and 13 rebounds in 29 minutes, how could it be otherwise? Oh, but the sideline show put on by Wolfpack coach Jim Valvano, if not as noticeable, was at least as fun to watch. He totaled one near technical, one split pair of trousers, one eyeball-to-eyeball argument and numerous bodily contortions in 40 minutes for the benefit of a national television audience. For the benefit of those who concentrated on J.R.'s exploits, here is a verbal home movie about Coach Vs first trip to the Smith Center, and his first matchup with Mr. Reid. 4:48 into the game: Mike Giomi gets called for charging at the tail end of a fastbreak. Valvano is overcome by the call, falling and sliding on his back with arms and legs flailing. The move costs Valvano a seam in the seat of his pants. It seems to cost him more a few seconds later, when referee Lenny Wirtz signalled a technical foul against Valvano for being out of the coach's box. But the Wolfpack coach, screaming into Wirtz's face from a distance of eight millimeters, successfully argues that a television timeout had been called, giving him free reign to be on the court. 5:03 into the game: N.C. Valvano, determined to make known his opinion that the basket should count, dramatically waves his whole upper bddy straight up and down with two fingers extended. 9:08 into the game: Reid scores on an easy layup off an alley oop pass. Valvano rolls his eyes back in his head and throws a towel into the air in disgust. 14:55 into the game: Teviin Binns gets called for a reach-in foul on Reid. Coach V pleads the case for his player on his hands and knees. "One hell of a call, Lenny," he opines quite clearly. 1:03 into the second half: Reid scores again on a bank shot from the paint. Valvano looks at J.R. as he runs back down the court and shrugs. "What can you do?" he mouths. 10:10 into the second half: Kenny Smith misses the front end of an one-and-one. Reid gets the rebound and puts it back in. Valvano reacts to the play by leaving his seat and displaying every inch of his approx imately 10-inch vertical jump. Postgame interview: Coach V's gravel voice, considerably harsher than that of Dean Smith, causes the microphone in the press room (which doubles as the Carolina Memorabi lia room) to scream with feedback. "Thirty-eight million dollars and look at the sound system they have, jeez. Hey, when does Dean's movie come on? Have I missed it?"
