4The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, January 22, 1987 Swimmers make ECU lake a dive By CHRIS SPENCER Staff Writer !: The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams crushed East Carolina Wed nesday in a dual meet at Maurice X. Koury Natatorium. ; ; The male Pirates entered the meet with a record of 7-1, while the ECU "women boasted a mark of 8-1. However, the outcome was never in doubt as UNC romped, 160-52 in the men's division and 129-82 on the ladies' side. Pacing the Lady Tar Heels were two freshmen. Ellen Young won the 50-meter freestyle and the 400-meter free relay, and Karen Engel tri umphed in the 100-meter freestyle and the 400-meter free relay. North Carolina's women divers were led by junior Erika Schmidt, who swept both the one-meter and three-meter events. Other event winners included Amy Pritchard, Nancy Page, Mary Lou O'Connor, and Wendy Powers. The Pirates never had a chance in the men's meet as the Tar Heels won an incredible 12 of 13 events. Leading the balanced Tar Heel attack was freshman Dixon Mit chell, winner of the 100-yard back stroke and 400-yard medley relay. Other event winners were Clay Wellborn, Tony Monasterio, Daryll Johnston, Doug Mecklenburg, Brad Hodges, Marc Croggon, and Scott Fuller. Sophomore Andy Hunter led the Tar Heel divers, sweeping the one-meter and three-meter events. "This meet was a very good one for us," said UNC coach Frank Comfort. uIt gave us a chance to swim different people in different events and to have some people in front-line situations." Both teams travel to Charlottes ville to meet a very strong Virginia team on the first of February. "Virginia's men have the best talent in the conference," Comfort warned. AMERICA!! Y?
