The group, which originally called itself the Old Well Cloggers, grew to a total of 25 people. One of the members, student Vann Day, decided the group should expand to include UNC and the community. "Our first show was at the Chi Psi house. They were having a bluegrass band and we were asked to perform," said Day. "Later, when we danced in the Apple Chill Festival, we decided to spice up our image and use the festival's name as our own." The Apple Chill Cloggers went on to perform at other events, and their career had begun. Day, a pharmacist at Duke Med ical Center, is the only active original member left. He said the UNC Clogging Club and The Apple Chill Cloggers are the same group. "Anyone can join the club at any time, but you have to audition to be in the Apple Chill troop," said Day. Clogging to bluegrass music is nothing new in this area, and Dance Theatre combines technical precision with artistic innovations : Excellent dancing and intriguing programming distinguished Tues day's Memorial Hall appearance by the North Carolina Dance Theatre. The first dance event in the Carolina Union's current Performing Arts Series featured four works of widely contrasting styles. But variety was niot the program's only virtue; two oX the dances, the second and the third, went beyond good and entered the sphere of the remarkable. J The opening number was "Giuli ahi: Variations on a Theme," a low key classical ballet. Dressed in peasant-type outfits, the ensemble rendered a lighthearted interpreta tion of a classical guitar concerto. Jhe beauty of the work sprang from the purity of ballet, a dance form which allows no room for lack of precision. Being human, the dancers, particularly the males, displayed a few very minor flaws: toes not fully pointed, lines not held long enough, slips in perfection of ensemble. But t Mitchell's Formal J: Wear ; Parkway Plaza ll 493-0874 The largest formal wear company in the Southeast -with 100 convenient loca tions and over forty years of ' experience. '"We have the look your after" - " - r FRIDAY SWIMMING & DIVING vs. AUBURN Women 2:00 PM : Men 5:00 PM KOURY NATATORIUM ... .... Gilmer kicks up his heels with his clogging itself has been around for centuries. "The settlers came from the British Isles and brought step dancing or Irish jigs with them," Day said. "It eventually got isolated to the less traveled mountain regions where it was influenced by the Indians. It was not until the 1930s that it evolved into a couples dance." Clogging has taken the UNC Apple Chill Cloggers into other countries. The troop has traveled to Ireland, Switzerland, Portugal, Norway, Belgium and Canada. This summer the group will visit Italy and Czechoslovakia. Jeanette Hart, a senior education major who joined the troop in her sophomore year at UNC, said "I saw an article in the Daily Tar Heel about the cloggers, and 1 had been trying to find a good extracurricular activity!" "It's a great outlet for the stu dents," said Hart. "How else would some students get to travel so extensively and broaden their horizions?" The UNC Apple Chill Cloggers include both students at the Univer sity and citizens in the community, Hart said. However, all of the Elizabeth Ellen Dance on the whole, the dancing was extremely accurate, and the mood conveyed was one of innocent happiness. "Satto (Wind Dance)," a post modern pas de deux, was the most stunning work on the program. On the half-lit stage, Jeffrey and Chris tye Crevier presented a dance of other-worldly power, both eerie and primeval. Christye, limber beyond belief, made waves with her body as if she had no bones. Her role as the wind was spiritual, and she com bined well with the more sensual male figure. "Satto" was light-years away from "Giuliani;" it was as mystic and suggestive as the ballet was simple and innocent. Jeffrey Crevier returned to the stage in "Caught," a solo set to searing synthesizer music. Never have strobe lights been used more effectively than in this work. In an ultimate exercise in timing, Crevier leaped in darkness so that the strobe caught him at various heights in mid air. The effect was like watching a film or a slowed-down animated sequence. At times, he seemed to float. At others, he appeared to be running through the air in slow motion. The piece ended with Crev ier standing in the spotlight's glare, his well-muscled chest heaving just once before blackness obscured him. n n n J I DTHTony Deifell partner dancers are active students or grad uates of UNC. "We try to maintain an equal ratio of active students to citizens. This gives us a variety of schedules so we will always have enough dancers to participate in the many shows that we schedule in a given time slot," said Day;' Recently the UNC Apple Chill Cloggers were recognized by the North Carolina Arts Council, which recognizes such groups as the North Carolina Symphony. The cloggers will receive state-wide recognition, as well as some additional funding from the Council. The UNC Apple Chill Cloggers are looking for some talented young individuals to fill in spaces left by UNC seniors. The Clogging Club meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Union. However, if you' are interested in joining their troop, the cloggers are holding an open house in the Union at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10. Tryouts for the actual team will be the following week. For more information about the UNC Apple Chill Cloggers, call Vann Day at 967-5759. Both the concept and the execution of this unusual work were amazing. The final dance, "Clowns and Others," was a comedic ensemble set to piano music by Prokofiev. Open ing with a lineup of dancers in assorted White costumes bathed in multi-colored light, "Clowns" pro ceeded with vignettes of classic clown-like situations. One of the funniest was the romantic pas de deux in which the suitor held his sweetheart's foot and missed her lips only to kiss her throat. Other situations included a mock funeral and squabbles over a coveted bal loon and lollipop. The work brought out the company's acting skills as none of the other dances had done. "Clowns" was evidence that the dancers have a conveyable sense of humor in addition to their great technical talent. The piece ended as it began, in a pose reminiscent of "A Chorus Line." Although the evening's program was fairly short, it was of the highest quality. Company artistic director Salvatore Aiello deserves much praise not only for directing the show but also for choreographing half of the dances ("Satto" and "Clowns"). The two Creviers in particular distinguished themselves, but the entire company was strong. The North Carolina Dance Theatre is something of which the state should be proud. A truly modern profes sional company, it can preserve the integrity of the old as well as explore the frontiers of the original. American Heart Association Avoid the lottery blues.
