aHpaMaapa 6The Daily Tar HeelFriday, February 6, 1987 Playmakers produce a woman's 'Voice' Dy ALSTON RUSSELL Staff Writer "The Human Voice, the second production in Playmakers Repertory Company's Playfest '87, opens tomorrow night at the Paul Green Theatre. This play, written by Jean Cocteau, continues a series of three plays focusing on women and their relations as individuals to society. "The Woman," played by Cigdam Onat, comprises the entire cast for this 50-minute production. The drama consists of her telephone conversation with an ex-lover of five years on the night before his wedding. Although "The Human Voice" was first produced nearly 50 years ago, the dramatic setting remains in a state of limbo. The stage setting focuses on one telephone with a long cord. The production represents a new creation since Cocteau leaves no American Heart Association set standards for the performance. "The play is a dramatic study of a woman in pain," said director Arthur Housman. "The monologue covers a wide spectrum of emotion and creates tension due to its frequent interruptions." Housman and Onat have been preparing for "Voice" since the summer of 1984. In order to enhance their interpretation of the mono logue, Housman and Onat have tried to search out the real character of the woman and her ex-lover. Hous man explains the difficulty in this since no character details are implicit in the script. Housman and Onat are married in real life. "Our artistic sensibility is so similar that it startles us," Housman said of their working relationship. The unique quality of this one woman play appears in the strong response it elicits from everyone who views it. Housman said that each response is personal, depending on how well one identifies with the woman character. "Whether the response represents love or hate, it is not neutral," he said.
