By LORNA KHALIL Staff Writer In its second loss of the season, the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team was defeated in its final home meet by tough Auburn team, 136-130, Friday afternoon in Koury Natatorium. The loss marks UNC's second in as many tries against Auburn, which is a perennial top 10 power in women's swimming. The 22nd ranked Tigers moved their record to 2-3 with the win, while the 1 1 th ranked Tar Heels slipped to 7-2 on the season with only one dual meet against N.C. State remain ing in the regular season. The competition was close throughout the entire meet and was finally decided on the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay which Auburn captured by two seconds. They are a great team," senior co-captain Martha McCann said. "We were all expecting a great meet and we knew each point would be critical. The coaches expected it to come down to the last relay." Although they lost to a lower ranked team, the Tar Heels had a good meet. Co-captain Susan . . . And men's team comes up short as well By CHRIS SPENCER Staff Writer The 19th-ranked Auburn Tig ers defeated the UNC men's team 124-93 Friday in a swim meet at Koury Natatorium, despite a strong individual performance by Tar Heel sophomore Larry Bloch. UNC's record fell to 5-4 while the Tigers improved to 2-4. Auburn could not shake UNC until the second half of the meet, when the Tigers took six of the last eight events. The Tigers were led by Rod Bowman and Stephen Bauman, who won two events each. Jose Rocha turned in an excellent diving performance, sweeping both the one-meter and three meter events. V.' O J ! In addition to participating in the victorious 200-yard medley relay, O'Brien gained three individual first-place finishes by winning the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes and the 200-yard indivdual medley. Junior standout Melanie Bud demeyer also had a good day for North Carolina despite coming off a week-long illness. Budde meyer captured the 100- and 200 yard butterfly events and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle. UNC had two other individual event winners against Auburn. Sophomore Wendy Powers won the 100-yard breaststroke and Kim Beattie won the 200-yard freestyle, an event where she just missed breaking her own pool record. Although she didnt win an individual event, junior Mon ica Strahl boosted the Tar Heels by turning in the best perfor mance of her college career. These great efforts were not enough for UNC to overcome the Tigers, however. North Carolina needed more crucial fifth-place finishes, but Auburn had a little more depth. winning the 400-yard free relay, swimming a strong leg on the 400 yard medley relay, and taking the 100-yard freestyle in a pool record time of 45.24. "1 bettered my lifetime best tonight, so I'm really happy with my times and hope to make the NCAA cuts at the ACC Cham pionship meet," Bloch said. "Only 30 people in the country make it, so I'm really proud of that." Other Tar Heel winners were senior Billy Williams and fresh man Tod Schroeder, who set a personal-best time in the 50-yard freestyle of 20.84. UNC coach Frank Comfort said, "Auburn has been one of the best teams in the nation for the last ISyears and they showed it ""tonight They 'are an excellent1 team. The Villages Smith Level Road Carrboro, NC BURGER CISCO - -" at m BURGER Wrestlers dominate Terps, Cavs By BOB YOUNG Assistant Sports Editor The most impressive statistic from the UNC wrestling team's two weekend victories over Virginia (34 4) and Maryland (36-14) was not to be found in the combined score of 70-18; or in the fact that Tar Heel wrestlers scored five pins against the Terrapins; or that UNC has an ACC winning streak of 1 3 matches dating back to 1985. The most impressive numbers are the total career wins compiled by UNC seniors Al Palacio and Chip McArdle. Palacio, the country's top tanked wrestler at 118, has a season mark of 33-0. McArdle, second rated at 126, is 27-7 on the year. But their career marks 114-17-3 for Palacio and 112-34-1 for McArdle make them the two winningest wrestlers in the history of the ACC. Both athletes, along with Joe Silvestro at 167, wrestled in their final home match Sunday against Maryland. Because Maryland's wrestler at 190 had to catch an early flight out of Raleigh-Durham Regional Air port, that match was contested first. UNC freshman Ben Oberly and the Terrapins' Jeff Giovino fought to a 6-6 tie after two periods, but Oberly gained an early advantage in the final stanza and pinned Giovino with 46 seconds remaining in the match. At 118, Palacio got out to a 5 0 first-period lead against Dan Mclntyre. But the All-American made the score in the match a moot point when he pinned Mclntyre a minute into the second period. At 126, McArdle faced the Ter rapins' Troy Lawrence. By the time the match was 10 seconds old, Lawrence was picked up off the mat. Six seconds later, he was firmly stuck to that same mat with McArdle in Scoreboard Men's Basketball UNC 74, Virginia 73 UNC Reid 714 7-8 21. Popson 2-9 0-1 5, Wolf 8-11 0-0 16. Lebo 4-10 0-0 10, K.
