New 6S&ver9 fares heat nip price wars
By BECKY RIDDICK
Staff Writer
' "I'm sorry, could you call back
later in the week? We're swamped
right now!" was the only available
comment from local travel agencies
,and airline reservation desks last
week as airlines began another battle
in the never-ending price wars.
The source of this sudden rush was
,the new "MaxSaver" campaign
.launched by Eastern and Continen
tal Airlines on January 29. This new
fare means a possible 40 percent off
; already reduced "Supersaver" rates
; on flights within the continental
.United States.
Competitive airlines responded
immediately with their own version
of the "MaxSaver" fares.
! Because the rates offered by most
of the airlines are identical, they
.'appear to be doing the same amount
6f business, said Sally Cummins, a
travel agent with Circle Travel in
"Chapel Hill.
"" Customers have to give a little as
..well to receive the low fares. Some
of the restrictions placed on the
"MaxSaver" rates include the follow
ing: Divest
he said.
Businessmen believe the call for
divestment is only a passing political
concern, he said.
"Meanwhile campanies interest in
universities, to recruit and research,
will far transcend this temporary
political manifestation in respect to
South Africa," Miller said.
Anne Griffin, a research analyst
for the Investor Responsibility
.Research Center, said she agreed
4hat divestment would not be a
pasting trend, and it would not
endanger grants.
"(Corporations and universities)
don want the negative publicity that
?omes with the withdrawal of funds,"
Griffin said.
But Miller said when universities
are competing for grants, those
corporations doing business in
South Africa might eliminate univer
sities that have divested its stocks in
favor of those that have not.
Although universities and colleges
receive a great deal of grant money
from corporations, 125 schools have

a Tickets must be used for travel
before May 20, 1987. "MaxSaver"
rates are scheduled to end on this
date.
B Tickets must be purchased at
least 2 days before departure.
B Customers must purchase a
round-trip ticket and must depart
and return on the same airline.
B There can be no refund, can
cellation or flight change once the
reservation has been made.
B Tickets must be purchased
within 24 hours of making the
reservations.
B Only a limited number of seats
are available on selected flights to
certain cities.
B Travelers must stay Saturday
night at their destination before
taking a return flight.
"MaxSaver" is the most restrictive
of the special fares, Cummins said.
But still, tickets are selling out and
are becoming increasingly harder to
get as more people find out about
the new rates.
The price difference in flights to
New York City from Raleigh
Durham Airport is an example of
adopted some kind of divestment
action, said Richard Knight, a
research associate for the American
Committee on Africa. Of these
schools, 55 have completely divested,
bringing the total of stocks sold to
$3.9 billion, he said.
"Schools can get into very serious
problems with corporations. (Grant
witholding) would certainly be a
threat to academic freedom and the
independence of colleges, Knight
said. "I think some corporations
might use (divestment) as an excuse
in some cases. Sometimes they might
be using it as an excuse to cut back
costs."
Wayne Jones, associate vice chan
cellor of finance, said he knew that
some U.S. corporations have threa
tened to withhold grant money of
divesting universities, but he would
not try to predict the future of UNCs
grants.
"I think it's too soon to tell
whether threats would in fact be
implemented," he said.
Chancellor Christopher Fordham
III said he would also be cautious
in predicting the outcome of divest
ment. But he said the University

the effect of the new "MaxSaver"
campaign on ticket prices.
A regular round-trip ticket from
RDU to New York City on Pied
mont Airlines is $300.
The "Supersaver" rate (which until
now was the lowest) is $178 round
trip.
Under the new "MaxSaver" rates,
tickets cost $98 for weekday travel.
If tickets were purchased for travel
on Friday or Saturday, the "Max
Saver" price would be $118 round
trip.
Weekday and weekend prices can
be combined, however, so that
someone leaving on Friday and
returning on Monday would pay
$108 for round-trip tickets.
Tickets already purchased at
regular and "Supersaver" rates may
be turned in and exchanged for
tickets at "MaxSaver" rates.
"These special rates are not always
offered in every market," said Mark
Fisher, owner of Small World Travel
on Franklin Street. If an airline has
an exclusive route to a city, "Max
Saver" rates will probably not be
available for those flights, he added.
Different airlines have designated

McNeill, 45; and McBride, 39.

different dates as the last day to buy
tickets at "MaxSaver" rates, said
Cummins.
Piedmont and United Airlines will
no longer sell tickets at "MaxSaver"
rates after March 1, Cummins said.
Tickets bought before this date are
good for travel through May 20.
Eastern, Delta and Continental
Airlines stop selling at "MaxSaver"
rates on May 16, Cummins said.
These tickets are also good for travel
through May 20.
Ticket prices are scheduled to rise
overall after March 1, Fisher said.
"People who really want to save
money should buy before then," he
said.
Fisher said there was a rush for
the tickets at the beginning of last
week. One day, people were lined up
outside the door of the business when
Fisher got there to open up for the
day. But by the end of the week,
business was back to normal.
Fisher and Cummins both said
business could pick up again this
week.
"I don't think anybody thought it
would be like this," Cummins said.

Miller said everything went well

minor problems in communication
which "were to be expected." Miller
said the biggest disapointment was
that less than 20 percent of the

"I think people get tired of the
elections and after the first one tend
to tune them out," she said. "That's
too bad because this election is
almost more important than the first

Miller said all the polling sites

to encourage voter turnout.

U.S. airlines compete

By PHIL CRAIG

Piedmont Airlines' bid for non
stop service from Charlotte- Douglas
Airport to London's Gatwick Air
port gained important ground last
week as an independent public
counsel recommended the Piedmont
route over American Airlines' pro
posed route from Raleigh-Durham
Airport.
The counsel was in charge of
recommending two U.S. gateways to
and from the London Airport. The
other recommendation went to Delta
Air Lines of Cincinnati.
The major factor in the decision
was Piedmont's existing hub at the
Charlotte airport, according to a
report issued by the counsel.
The report was submitted to
Administrative Law Judge William
Kane. He is expected to make a final
recommendation to the Department
of Transportation on the location of
the two gateways by early March.
The Transportation Department
is expected to make a final decision
on the two international gateways by
April 1.
American Airlines plans to open
a major hub at RDU in June. But
"... even if American's hub opens
and continues to build on schedule,
it will have nowhere near the scope
of Piedmont's proven hub in Char
lotte," the counsel said . : ' t ' v 1
Representatives from both airlines
agreed that Charlotte's present
availability to begin the route is a
large factor.
Don McGuire, vice president of
public affairs for Piedmont said the
airline was pleased with the recom
mendation. "(But) you never, never,

this," he added.
There is nothing binding involved
with the recommendation, but it is
a strong point in Piedmont's favor,
said Carl Nelson, a lawyer for
American Airlines.
"I can't say we wouldn't have loved
to had (the recommendation),"
Nelson said. "But this is not some
thing you quit over."
W. Thackara Brown Jr., director
of the RDU Land Us in London
Task Force, didn't see the recom
mendation as being too significant.
"The public counsel is just another
party in this case," Brown said.
"We're not at all in tears. We think
we Ye still got a way to go."
But historically, the Transporta
tion Department has swayed toward
the recommendations of the public
counsel.
"Final decisions (have) matched
public counsel recommendations in
about 75 percent of international
route decisions made since the
process began in 1978," said John
Keppel, senior analyst with the
Transportation Department.
The fact that Piedmont is a
newcomer to the international
market is another plus for Charlotte
Douglas, experts said.
With the deregulation of the
airline industry, the Transportation
Department has been . looking to
increase the competition for interna
tional services.
If Piedmont does get the green
light, there is "no chance" of a same
plane, one-stop London to RDU
route via Charlotte, McGuire said.
"That kind of commitment has
already been made with Tampa,
Florida," he said.
