$The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, March 19, 1987 Hard work pays off for UNC Forensics By CORIN ORTLAM Staff Writer j Otj tephanie Ahlschwede raises Vher hammer and pounds a j KJr gummy bear, "Everyone should learn how to handle pres sures like gummy bears," she says. To the horror of the judges, she tfien puts some in the microwave j and says. "We can all take the heat like gummy bears.'" What is the f idea behind such gummy bear mutilation? . The gummy bears and the i actions are all part of an after j dinner speech which UNC Fore nsics (Debating) team member Ahlschwede has taken to several competitions. UNC Forensics is made up of a debating team and individual events teams which travel separately to about eight tournaments each year. The group is made up of both males and females, all of whom simply enjoy the speaking. A debate team member begins working in August to prepare for the first tournament at the end of September. A national debate topic is decided upon around the end of July, and all of the teams in the nation debate on that topic. This year's topic dealt with free speech and free press. The affirma tive argued for the widening protec tion of these rights. Such topics as libel, slander, and fighting words were hot topics. Separate from debate is the indi vidual events team. There are three categories in these events: rhetoric, unprepared and interpretation. Rhetoric includes persuasion, infor mative, sales, rhetorical criticism and after-dinner speeches. Unprepared categories are extemporaneous, and the speaker I Avoid the lottery blues. Apply nowf t All apartments on the bus line to J UNC. Fantastic Social Program. Carrboro Approx ' mil west ot Jones Ferry Rd Gateway to Quality Living has thirty minutes to write a seven minute speech or seven minutes to analyze and discuss a quote. "What weeds people out is the amount of work required," said Monty Hagler, captain of the indi vidual events team. "Before you can even compete, you have to write a speech. The team itself doesrrt have to establish any restrictions. There is a personal factor involved; those who want to work stay on the team." An example of the amount of work required of a debator is the fact that an average of twenty pie ces of evidence (known as "cards" in debate jargon) are used in the first affirmative speech. There are three other speeches in one debate, and a team must go through eight preliminary rounds in a tournament. "It's a lot of work, an awful lot of work," says David Hood, a member of the debating team. In fact, an hour of credit can be obtained for research done on a topic. However, despite its time res traints, team members enjoy the time they put into forensics. "The best part about it is that we get to meet so many people," says Leslie Duggins. One member said it gives her a chance to learn about the pieces of literature that she interprets. "It's like stepping into someone else. You can't move from the waist up so you have to convey the character in other ways," she says. UNC Forensics is struggling to keep a small, but successful team at its current rate of success. Their budget has limited the number of tournaments they can attend. Alschwede attended a high school in Nebraska which had $200 more in their debate budget. "It's incredi ble what weVe done without fund ing," she said. Both the debate and individual events teams have traveled to many other universities and colleges, including Emory, Kentucky, Van derbuilt. Northwestern, Dartmouth, Wake Forest, Mississippi, George Mason and Alabama. The individual events team con sistently placed in the top three in Sweepstakes (the overall team placement) with only six or eight competing members. Last year, the team qualified to go to the national tournament, where one team . piavvu ill in hi uiaiuanv j j imcipicuuiuu, mice utuci), pv members placed in the top 12, and three more made the top 24. w-1----- SSCALILEO 967-3125 9-6 Mon.-Fri. 10-5 Sat. 1-5 Sun.
