Hannay said audience members
are likely to hear a new emphasis
on lyricism. The music today is
melodious, rhythmically exciting,
and harmoniously attractive," he
said. He said there is a new acces
sibility in creative arts in general that
has appeared in chamber music, and
the result is that modern music is
far removed from what was known
as modern music 20 years ago.
Hannay will have his own piece,
"The Nightingale and the Rose,"
performed during the forum. He said
it is a theater piece, or music with
a dramatic story without being a
simple song or a full-scale opera.
Hannay 's piece, for flute, soprano,
guitar and double bass, is an adap
tation of a fairy tale by Oscar Wilde.
The performers will recite the nar
rative as they play, so the sounds
and the words of the drama are
incorporated, he said.
Other artists at the forum will
include Walter Ross, from the
University of Virginia. His piece,
"Rated X," for flute and bass, will
be performed.
Two music composition graduates
of UNC will also have their music
performed. James Mobberly, now
teaching at the University of Mis
souri, will help perform two pieces
that will include recorded sounds.
Michael Kallstrom, now teaching
at the Westminster Choir College,
will help perform selections from his
piece "Wind, Water, Flame," for
bass-baritone, piano and pre
recorded audio.
Forum c oncerts will be held in Hill
Hall Auditorium today at 8 p.m. and
Saturday at I and 8 p.m.
