6The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, April 1, 1987 Despite good acting, whodunit comedy 'Burglar' cops out Lawrence Block's literary charac ter, Bernard Rhodenbarr, the day time book seller and nighttime burglar, has been cinematically transformed into the sly, sneaky Bernice Rhodenbarr (Whoopi Gold berg) in Hugh Wilson's latest comedy-drama, "Burglar." Goldberg stars with Bob Gold thwait, G.W. Bailey and Lesley Ann Warren in this funny whodunit that pits Goldberg against the world. Indeed, it seems that the whole world is chasing her half the time. She semi witnesses a murder from a locked closet while committing a robbery, and when the wrong person goes to jail, Bernice ("Bernie wants to find the right one. "Burglar" is set in San Francisco, where Bernie owns a paperback and rare book shop. Those lovely, hilly streets of San Fran make good, bumpy locales for chase scenes that leave the audience dizzy and breath less, due to the excellent cinemato graphy and camera placement by William Fraker. Goldthwait, although a supremely funny comedian, gets star billing for only a 20-minute appearance. Goldthwait plays Carl Heftier, who is shown in "Burglar" television ads as being Bernie's boss and a dog hater who owns a poodle grooming shop. But he's not Bernie's boss, and there's only one scene where he's snown washing a dog (the same one shown on TV). Bernie and Carl's contact is extremely limited in the movie. In the books, the pair, known as Bernie and Carolyn, are drinking buddies and burglary accomplices. The fun and friendship of the books are somewhat lost in the movie. Gold berg and Goldthwait are just too unlikely a pair to be cast as best friends. Goldthwait's neu rotic speech and goofy appearance can't help but be hilarious. Goldberg is a sassy woman who knows her stuff, such as how to get out of hot spots, usually by punching. Other characters in the story are Ray Kirshman (Bailey), a retired cop trying to squeeze $20,000 out of Bernie; Dr. Cynthia Sheldrake (Warren), a dentist arrested for killing her husband; Carson Verrill (James Hardy), a gay lawyer; and Frankie (Elizabeth Ruscio), a lonely bar hooker. Director Wilson co-wrote the screenplay of "Burglar" with Joseph Loeb III and Matthew Weisman. If their intention was to use Block's names without the characteristics of his characters, they did a good job of it. Otherwise, they either loused up Block's idea or had to write the parts around Goldberg and Gold thwait, cast by Marsha Kleinman. Wilson also wrote and directed the first "Police Academy" and "Rustler's Rhapsody." He created and produced "The Tony Randall Show," "WKRP In Cincinnati" and the new series "Easy Street." In "Burglar," he takes the action more seriously and makes the acting more precise than in "Police Academy." The talent in front of the camera and behind the scenes of "Burglar" is impressive and extensive. But one person Kleinman, the caster erred in big ways that cause "Bur glar" to become just one of those comedy cops-and-robbers movies with big names in the spotlights.
