6The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, Ap':' 21, 1987 Sports Women s track aurker wnmis golt rale From staff reports The UNC golf team came up short in the ACC Tournament this past weekend, but senior Greg Parker ended his conference career on the highest note, as he birdied the 18th hole Sunday to take the individual title. Parker finished with 70-69-71-210, to edge out Brad Clark of Clemson by one stroke. Clark sandwiched a 73 between two 69s to shoot 211. Tied for third at 215 were John Hughes of UNC (69-74-72), Jeff Putman of Virginia (75-70-70), and Tim Straub of Wake Forest (72-74-69). Clark got the last laugh, team wise, though. Clemson. ranked 17th nationally, came from three shots behind to take the title by seven shots over Georgia Tech and Wake Forest. The Tigers shot a 5-under-par 283 Sunday to finish at 3-under-par (86 1 ) for the tourney. The Tar Heels held the three-shot lead after play ended Saturday at the Bryan Park Golf Course in Greens boro. But UNC blew up to 7-over-par 295 on Sunday and finished a distant fourth at 870, nine strokes Duke to stop them from doing that today." Just ten seconds after UtfC scored to tie the game, Paul Mahoney put Duke back on top, firing a Chris Banes' assist past Aburn. Lukes scored two more goals and Mike Fidgeon added one to make the score 7-3 Duke with 8:14 remaining. Gary and Joey Seivold put in a goal each and Duke's Cabrera had CHJN65E RESTAURANT 790 Airport Road, Net to A&P Master Chef C.C. UNC's unhoped-for explosion was preeminently the result of the three Tar Heels -other than Hughes and Parker. Jim Sowerwine shot a 76 on Sunday to finish at 221, while Peter Brennan also carded a 76 for 224 and Brendan Kennedy turned in an 80 for 234. Parker had what seemed to be a commanding three-stroke lead over Clark and Tech's Bill McDonald going into play Sunday. He began the day at 5-under-par, but double bogeyed the eighth hole. Clark birdied the 10th to make the tour nament a match-play affair. Parker birdied the 12th and the 14th while Clark tapped in for birdie on 14 as well. The UNC senior then bogeyed the 17th to set up the climactic final hole. A soft wedge shot left him with nothing more than a gimme for birdie and the title. ACC Track The UNC women's track team, while not being able to dethrone defending champion Virginia, estab lished itself as a rising power in the conference as it finished in second one as the score stood at 8-5 at the end of three periods. At the start of the third quarter, the Tar Heel surge machine got rolling again, as Scott Cox and Brett Davy each scored in the opening minutes to bring UNC to within one at 8-7. Virginia took the team title with 185 points, with UNC following with 145. The next closest team was Georgia Tech with 71. Jill Irizarry, a junior from East Setauket, N.Y., was the leader of the young Tar Heel team, winning the conference heptathlon title while taking second in the 400-meter hurdles, fourth in the 100 hurdles and helping UNC to a victory in the 1,600 relay. Freshman Kim Austin also won an individual title, taking first in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.06. She also finished fourth in the triple jump. The men's team finished in fourth place with 88'2 points. N.C. State took its third straight team trophy with 157, outdistancing Clemson (140) and Georgia Tech (133). Individual winners for UNC included Kevin McGorty, who defended his title in the decathlon on Thursday. McGorty also placed in the javelin (fifth) and the pole vault (third). Jim Farmer, a senior from from page 1 Carolina bomb- Gary Seivold and Scott Cox each scored his second goal of the game in the next seven minutes and the Tar Heels trailed by one with 2:40 remaining. Duke, sensing UNC was on the verge of a surge, called a timeout, only to turn the ball over on its next possession. The Tar Heels had two shots at tying the game, but McCullough came up with big saves on shots by Joey Seivold and Tim Welsh at 1:13 and 1:00, respectivley. With 55 seconds remaining, UNC was called for being offsides and Duke went into a delay to run out the clock. r1 PLANNED PARENTHOOD Kroger Plaza Chapel Hill LTU i i " I I I ;?5THIS COUPON IN FOR $5 OFF YOUR FIRS? A couple of weeks ago, UNC pitcher Todd Kopczynski quit the baseball team because he was angry over a lack of playing time. After talking it over with coach Mike Roberts, he decided to return. Kopczynski is undoubtedly happy with that decision. A week ago, he went the distance to pick up a win over Virginia in the friendly confines of Boshamer Stadium. Sunday, he did the same in Charlottesville, holding the Cavaliers to four hits and a single ninth-inning run as the Tar Heels took a 9-1 decision to cap a doubleheader sweep. The victory upped Kopczynski's record to 2-2, while UNC moved to 24-1 1 overall and 11-4 in the ACC. The pair of losses knocked Virginia's mark to 14-22 and 4-10. Center fielder Maria Powers, who was named tournament MVP, was 2-for-4 on the day to spark the Tar Heels. UNC reached the championship game on the strength of the brilliant effort Saturday by mound ace Virginia Augusta. Augusta pitched both ends of a doubleheader (of sorts), throwing 14 innings and yielding just five hits. In the first of her herculean performances, Augusta shut out Ohio University, yielding just one hit as UNC won 3-0.
