What's gray with blue stripes, 19
feet long, spends most of its time in
water, has the raw strength of 248
horses and is only 3 days old?
No, it is not a baby anaconda.
It's the UNC Water Ski Club's new
boat, and it was parked in the Pit
Tuesday to encourage interested
students to join the club.
Ski Club President Richard Led
don said that the Master Craft
competition ski boat, purchased
Saturday, is the "state of the art in
The $14,300 boat was funded
mostly by a loan from UNC's Sports

The 40-member club skis mostly
on Orange and Falls lakes, Leddon
said. The membership cost is $25 for
half a year, and ski times can be
reserved for specific times of the day.

skiers can only be pulled by a boat
driver who has passed both the
written and driving tests.

drivers who has been trained,

Club member Robby Morrison
said that he has enjoyed the two trips
that he has been on since the club
started this fall. "It's been great so
far. WeVe had 14 or 15 people go,
and weVe had no problems. Other
members bring their private boats,
so everyone gets to ski."
The biggest misconception about
the club, Morrison said, is that
students think it is for competitive
"A lot of members who have been
gung-ho have done some competi
tion," he said, "but we also realize
that the roots of the club are with
the recreational skier. We want to
teach people to ski on two skis, to
slalom, barefoot or whatever."
Although the team is mostly
comprised of recreational skiers,
there are competitive individuals in
the club, Leddon said.
Robert Mitchell ranked 17th in
the national slalom competition last
year, and another club member.
Mart Nesbitt, scored well in the state
meet, in the trick ski and jump
Leddon said he plans to enter the
UNC club in the South Atlantic
Conference next fall. The conference
is made up of teams from North
Carolina State University, Univer

University of Alabama, Auburn
University and other schools.
