Uave Arendas hit into a 4-6-3 double
play to end the inning.
Wake scored in the fifth on
Stiegele 's mammoth two-run homer
off the sign in left, and after the next
batter hit a solid single to center,
Dougherty was lifted for Chris
Cornacchio. Dougherty gave up 7
hits in less than 5 innings of work.
Leaving too many men on base
(a dismal 10 for the game) finally
caught up with the Tar Heels in the
eighth. Maisano singled to left, and
one batter later, Perry lofted a fly
ball to left that plunked over the
fence and gave the Deacs a 4-3 lead.
In the home half of the inning,
the Heels scratched a run off of
suddenly-tough Humber. Lauria led
off with a single and Alvin Taylor
came in to pinch-run for him. After
Nevin bunted him to second, Devlin
hit a shot over third base to bring
Taylor home.
But in the ninth, the Deacons
struck back. After Brian Shablosky
reached on an error, Neil Avent
popped up a bunt and first baseman
Howard Freiling converted the
Bodybuilding tourney
From staff reports
This Friday, April 24, the sport
of behemoths will return to Chapel
Hill, as the 1987 UNC Bodybuilding
Championship takes place.
All of the posing and flexing will
take place in Carmichael Audito
rium. In the morning, at 10 a.m.,
there will be a period of pre-judging.
Presumably that means something
important, although admission is
free.
The real action, with the sweat
pouring off bodies and trickling onto
the stage, with hearts pounding in
anticipation, will take place that
night. The main show will start at

double play. UNC coach Mike
Roberts brought in Doug Torborg
(1-1), who leads the Tar Heel staff
in saves. But Stiegele singled, Sean
Gallaher walked and Maisano hit his
game-winner to left.
UNC, despite their bad play, had
a chance to win it in their half of
the ninth. Steve Mrowka led off with
an infield hit, sliding into first just
ahead of Shabosky's throw. Camp
bell sacrificed him to second, but
Freiling and Bell both flew out to
right to end the game.
"Wake deserved to win," said
Roberts. "They just played better
than we did. I didn't prepare us
mentally for this game and it showed.
We just weren't excited about play
ing Wake.
"I'm happy for Devy Bell, though.
He has had a great career and has
really come a long way."
The Tar Heels play at home today
against East Carolina at 2:30. The
13th-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow
Jackets invade Boshamer Stadium
Friday for a 6:00 game.
7:30.
Admission is $2 for the general
public and $1 for UNC students, as
long as they have proof of their
membership in this illustrious
institution.
The contest is sponsored by the
Nautilus Fitness Center of Chapel
Hill and Sigma Phi Epsilon
fraternity.
We almost forget the hook. Terry
Justice, the first winner of the UNC
Bodybuilding Championship in
1985, will serve as guest poser. That
should be enough to bring the house
down.
