The band's first EP on Relati vity Records, "High Octane Rev ival," was recognized as one of the top EPs of 1986 by "The Village Voice" and pop music critic Robert Palmer of "The New York Times." The band has just released their first full-length album, "Tiny Days," and in recent weeks their video of "MyBabyShe'sAllRight" has been on "120 Minutes," MTV's peek-a-boo look into the music of the future. Scruffy the Cat have been labeled "country-rock" and "roots rock-and-roll." None of those labels have any stick, though. In 175 E. SUNDAY 7 Tex Mex artistJoe "King" Car rasco will perform at Cat's Cra dle, 320 W. This band-aid's name is simply "rock and roll." Scruffy the Cat is a band that uses all the musical talents, influ ences and ideas of its members to come up with an original sound. With all these pushes and pulls within the band, few songs sound alike. The band members take turns writing the songs, sometimes collaborating, sometimes going solo. Tickets are $4 for the public and $3 for Friends of the ArtsCenter. Poet Shelby Stephenson and author Pamela Oldham will present readings from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hardback Cafe and Bookstore, 1 10 N. Columbia St. Admission is free and will be followed by a discussion and a reception for the authors. MONDAY 8 The local reggae artists I-TAL will perform at Cat's Cradle, 320 view. Scruffy the Cat-ers obviously enjoy being goofy, which is evident in the band's name and video. The words, though, are open to humorous and serious interpretations. For instance, the song "Shadow Boy" could be the story of the shy guy who can't gather the courage to ask out the girl he admires or it could be subtitled "Tales of a Peeping Tom." Charlie Chesterman, Scruffy's lead singer, said he does not think of the serious side of the songs when he writes them. However, lead guitarist Stephen Fredette said he does write with the inten tion of being serious. Scruffy must be a spotted cat. Franklin St. See WEEK'S FARE page 14 Bassist MacPaul Stanfield and drummer Randall Lee Gibson IV round out Scruffy the Cat. The fifth member of Scruffy, banjo player Stona Fitch, has left the band. Fitch does, however, appear on "Tiny Days." The personnel change has caused some adjustments, Fredette said. "I have to make more racket now," the guitarist said. The band is currently enjoying the rewards and suffering the hardships of prowling across the country. Scruffy would have it no other way. Scruffy the Cat returns to Cat's Cradle on June 10.
