12The Tar Heel Thursday, June 4, 1987 Fenner from page 1 Fenner was the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher in 1 986 with 1,250 yards, a total topped by only four other runners in the nation. Fenner's finest hour may have been on Nov. 15 when he electri fied the Kenan Stadium crowd by running for 328 yards against Virginia. The performance broke the ACC single-game rushing record. Ironically, Fenner did not start that game for disciplinary reasons. In a sophomore season filled with many great moments, like a 215-yard effort in the season opener against The Citadel, Fenner also had some memorable lapses. He overslept and missed the team bus on the day before the Kansas game. Fenner drove to the airport in time to catch Crum before takeoff, but the coach sent Fenner back to Chapel Hill. In the Florida State game in Tallahassee, Fla., Fenner bowled into Crum on an end run, breaking the coach's leg and forcing Crum to use crutches for the rest of the season. Fenner's season ended when he was suspended from the team in I l IX.!.. f A- "Camp'J ranville The Summer of 1987 We've Got The Pool!!! i .1.. i I !: i i f i i .i I',- .' Fenner did not accom pany UNC to the Aloha Bowl for its Dec. 27 game with Arizona. At a press conference in the Smith Center on Tuesday morn ing, Crum described Fenner as "a pretty intelligent youngster who had the ability to do about what he wanted to do." Reuben Davis, a senior defen sive tackle at UNC, expressed confidence in Fenner's innocence in the murder charge. I don't know that many details yet, but the feeling I have is that he is innocent," said Davis. "I dont think he's that kind of guy. I never thought he had that kind of potential." Davis said the team viewed Fenner as somewhat of a loner. "Nobody really knew about his social life. He went his way and everybody else went theirs. "It was like he had two different personalities. Sometimes it was like he was wanting to do right, then he'd come up with something else to get into. This time it looks like he's in over his head." mam nMm J Maura ii mm M, ''.liy ELLIOT ROAD at E FRANKLIN 98T-4737 $250 KlINHM ILLMTTKMatHUM) I erica'sSummerCub MX Check Our Theater For Details!
