Laboratory needs paid volunteers for pollution study By JUDY WILSON Staff Writer The Environmental Protection Agency Health Effects Laboratory on campus needs paid volunteers for studies about the different ways pollution affects 18- to 35-year-old people. The laboratory currently has over 300 active volunteers, said Sharon Pannell, project manager for the program, but it constantly needs more volunteers. "We're not at our capacity right now," she said. "This research is the way we go about setting national standards for clean air," Pannell said. Pay for volunteers ranges from $7 to S16 an hour, depending on com plexity and length of the studies. Health Effects Laboratory researchers study common air pollutants that naturally occur in the environment. For example, researchers simulate what it is like to be in downtown traffic in large cities. For some studies, volunteers inhale a mixture of ozone and clean air and breathe into a machine which measures before and after lung functioning and heart rate, said Pannell. Many of the studies use treadmills and stationary bicycles. The volunteers usually breathe no more pollutants than the amount that occurs naturally, she said. The effects last a very short time and are not harmful. The agency currently has a high demand for blacks, especially females, she said. It has already done different studies of white males and females. "It is important to study all groups," said Pannell. "Males and females respond dif ferently to the studies." Pannell said a few studies of people over 40 and 60 years old have been done, but normally the 18-to-35 age group is used in research because there are many people in that group who are available and who have the time to participate in research, she said. A potential volunteer must complete a medical history form and have psychological and phys ical exams before he or she can participate in studies. "We are very strict about mak ing sure people are in good phys ical health so they're not put at any risk," said Pannell. If the volunteer is accepted, he or she may take part in studies for a year. There are normally 16 to 20 studies going on at a time; volunteers choose which ones they would like to be involved in. The research center is located behind N.C. Memorial Hospital on Mason Farm Road and has been operating for about 10 years. The research is ongoing, and the center has the capacity to bring in 60 volunteers per week. "We're probably one of the most elaborate centers of our kind in the country, maybe in the world," said Pannell. If you are interested in getting involved in the program, call 966- 1532.
