30The Tar HeelThursday. July 16. 1987 Kenan Stadium Kenan Stadium, located near the center of campus, is generally refered to as one of . the . most beautiful football arenas in the country. Inside Sports magazine has rated the stadium as one of the five best places in America to watch a college football game. Tar Heel football teams have played in Kenan for 59 years. In the first game at Kenan, the Heels defeated Davidson 27-0 on November 12, 1927. William Rand Kenan, an 1894 UNC graduate, built the stadium as a memorial to his parents, William R. Kenan and Mary Hargrave Kenan. The complete cost of the stadium and the accompanying fieldhouse was $303,000. Bordered by Lenoir Hall, the Student Union, the Student Stores and the Under graduate Library, this open-air assembly is a popular meeting place for students throughout the day. During the warmer months, the entrenched area becomes a stage where students can hear speeches from campus groups on the latest controversy or maybe listen to their favorite evangelist as he preaches his words of wisdom. The Cube is regularly painted and re-painted with announcements of upcoming cam pus events, including union films, concerts, and speakers. 'Pit sitting" has become a noted phenomenon on the UNC cam pus, with some students actually skipping class to enjoy a can of soda and the paper while sitting in the sun.
