r t 34 1 ne i ar neer i nursaay, July 16, 1987 to X , xc The Smith Center The Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center a.k.a. the Dean Dome or the SAC offi cially opened in January 1986. (The occasion was a game against the Duke Blue Devils, and UNC won, 95-92.) The Smith Center is the third largest on-campus arena in the country, seating 21,444 for basket ball. It cost $33.8 million to construct and all the funds were private donations raised in a campaign led by former N.C. Gov. Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles. Since its opening, the Smith Center has also become a popular conceit spot. In the ,86-,87 school year, the Smith Center hosted several big-name artists, including Genesis, Billy Joel and Jimmy Buffett. The Iibuis Round Wilson Library, which served for 55 years as the research library in the humanities and social sciences at UNC, has been dedicated ' to special collections since the open ing of Davis Library. Foremost among the special resources of the building is the Southern Historical Collection of eight million manuscripts. Its Rare Book Collection con tains special groups such as the Hanes Collection of Incunabula, The Louis Round Wilson Library . including the ceremonial volumes that mark the millions in the library's holdings. The three mil lionth book was presented in the fall of 1983. The North Carolina Collection dates to an effort begun in 1844 and today contains more than 170,000 books and pamphlets. Louis Round Wilson, a Kenan professor and a University librar ian for 3 1 years, died several weeks short of his 103rd birthday in 1979.
