Clarence Darrow (Kurtwood
Smith), the head of an under
ground mob. Of course the mob
has connections, and Darrow is in
cohoots with the Number Two
man at OmniConsumer Products
Jones.
The nightmares are not the only
things Murphy retained in his
transformation to a cyborg (part
human, part machine). He also
retains an Old West gun twirl,
which his previous partner, Officer
Lewis (Nancy Allen), recognizes.
Together Lewis and Robocop
remove the slimy mob from the
Detroit streets and the corruption
within the Omni corporation.
Robocop, with Weller's adora
ble face and mannerisms, is a
likable creature. He's a superhero
with heart and he's not as sappy
as Superman or Lee Majors.
Unfortunately, the movie falls
short on comedy and overempha
sizes blood-and-guts violence. The
original machine cop, ED 209,
screws up and wipes out a young
exec, driving thousands of bullets
into his chest. And to top it off,
one of the bad guys falls into toxic
waste and his skin melts, turning
him into a monster-like creature.
And then he gets splattered across
an oncoming car. Get the point?
If moviegoers don't shy away
from "Robocop" because they
think it is juvenile, they will be in
for a big surprise. It is a dry
humored, blood and guts film.
However, although the movie has
its good points great acting,
unusual cinematography, a well
written plot for such a futuristic
idea, subtle irony and an appealing
creature the violence is a
negatively powerful element.
