Kenan Stadium
Kenan Stadium, located near
the center of campus, is generally
refered to as one of the most
beautiful football arenas in the
country. Inside Sports magazine
has rated the sodium as one of
the five best places in America to
watch a college football game.
Tar Heel football teams have
played in Kenan for 59 years. In
the first game at Kenan, the Heels
defeated Davidson 27-0 on
November 12, 1927.
William Rand Kenan, an 1894
UNC graduate, built the stadium
as a memorial to his parents,
William R. Kenan and Mary
Hargrave Kenan. The complete
cost of the stadium and the
accompanying fieldhouse was
$303,000. The original seating
capacity was 24,000.

The Pit
From about 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
each day, the Pit is the place to
be in between classes. Bordered by
Lenoir Hall, the Student Union,
the Student Stores and the Under-,
graduate Library, this open-air
assembly is a popular meeting
place for students throughout the
day.
During the warmer months, the
entrenched area becomes a stage
where students can hear speeches
from campus groups on the latest
controversy or maybe listen to
their favorite evangelist as he
preaches his words of wisdom,
Students who pass the Pit
during the day should also check
out the Cube, an all-purpose
billboard. The Cube is regularly
painted and re-painted with
announcements of upcoming cam
pus events, including union films,
concerts, and speakers.
"Pit sitting" has become a noted
phenomenon on the UNC cam
pus, with some students actually
skipping class to enjoy a can of
soda and the paper while sitting
in the sun. Experience has it that
if you sit in the Pit all day, you
can see everyone you know at least
once.
