The University does make exceptions in certain cases, how ever. If a freshman feels he has a compelling reason to have a car on campus, he can apply for a waiver at the traffic office. Kuralt from page 35 engraved before it could be printed. 6,000 copies rolled off the presses each day to serve the Tar Heel student body. "The staff wasn't very large," he remembered. "There were only about six or seven people putting out the paper." And most of those faithful few went on to have successful careers in journalism. Rolfe Neill, the 1954 managing editor, is now the publisher of the Charlotte Observer. One 1954 associate editor, Ed Yoder, is now a syn dicated columnist for the Washington Post; the other, Louis Kraar, is an editor of Fortune magazine. Kuralt said he vividly remem bered the afternoon of the dese gregation ruling. The story came over the Associated Press wire just as he was planning the next day's paper. "I remember thinking, 'now I don't have to worry about what to put on the front page, " he said. The Daily Tar Heel editorial staff applauded the landmark decision in the next day's editorial. "We welcomed the decision and said it was just and the ultimate decision was how you felt about it and the Daily Tar Heel felt good," Kuralt said. At that time, Kuralt said, there were only two black students at UNC, and they were segregated from the student body. "Though things did not change immediately, we knew they wouldn't," Kuralt said. Kuralt said the "Try to Remember" pilot will focus on the effects of the decision on American life. He said the episode may be aired during the fall season. a sort-of pizza of unknown nationality. They also serve wond erful desserts at good prices. Although hidden away down a small staircase, Tripodi's is usually busy. Pizza anyone? Well, when you're in the mood, Italian Pizzeria on West Franklin has the best. It's run by stern, dangerous-looking Italians, or maybe Sicilians, who mutter unintelligibly while they make your pie. Holy Mess If you have Mom or Dad's credit card, or a fat wallet, dress up and go to La Residence, a private home on Rosemary Street converted into a French restau rant. Very expensive. Gives you shivers just walking by the place. A lot of fine eateries have been left off this list, but that cant be helped. Remember, don't study so hard that you end up eating all your meals on campus and thus forget to treat your palate properly. from page 33 Seymour agreed with Wortman that the poor and the elderly are being harmed by televangelism. UI think it is clear that the major damage done by the televangelists is that they are exploiting vulner able people who give money in good faith who don't have the money to give," Seymour said. "This is a way of robbing the poor." Evans said that he does not see local churches benefiting from the controversy. "A church that teaches tithing will not be threa tened at all," he said. Wortman said that people who have seen that corruption can exist in televangelism will give their money to local or community churches where there is more credibility. "The urfficult thing for us now is to discern who has credibility," he said. Abrahamson said, "A distinc tion needs to be made between legitimate televangelists, such as Billy Graham, and the 'empire builders.' Billy Graham's first intent is preaching, not fund raising like Oral Roberts, Falwell and the Bakkers. Graham's min istry will be affected, but not devastated, because some people do not see the distinction between legitimate televangelists and others." Wartmon said, "The issue at stake here is character. It is not just Jim Bakker, i is Gary Hart, it is Ted Kennedy, it is all of those people who have the public's trust."
