The Tar HeelMonday, August 24, 19879 Meet someone eew Help college students adjust to a foreign land - Chapel Hill By JOANNE GORDON ArtsFeatures Editor UNC upperclassmen and grad uate students have the opportunity to help international students adjust to life in Chapel Hill through the Campus Friends program sponsored by the Inter national Students Center. "We are looking for people with free time and an interest in inter national affairs to help someone new get used to life around UNC," Campus Friends Coordinator Tracy Hall said. Campus Friends is a program designed to help newly-arrived international students adjust to life in the United States and to provide an opportunity for the develop ment of international friendships. "The Campus Friends program provides an excellent opportunity for UNC students to get involved, to learn about another country and culture and to see the United States from a different perspec tive," Hall said. Campus Friends must plan to arrive in Chapel Hill before August 19 and attend meetings prior to the beginning of the fall semester. On August 19 at 10 a.m., students will meet at the Interna tional Center to obtain informa tion about the program. On August 21, students will attend a mixer at 6 p.m. in the Great Hall, where they will meet their inter national friend and on August 22 at 2 p.m., the Campus Friends will attend a picnic at Battle House Field. After the initial meeting, there is no set schedule or time require ment for participation in the program. According to Hall, Campus Friends need to check up on their international friend dur ing the first two to four weeks of school. The program is individu alistic in that the amount of time spent together is up to the Campus Friends and depends on the indi vidual needs of the international students, he said. According to Hall, 1 1 1 students have applied to become Campus Friends. There will be 180-200 international students attending UNC in the fall. Students here for the summer can become involved with Campus Friends program by picking up students at the airport and hosting students. Remember that there is a $100 minimum per semester purchase requirement set by the University for students that live in residence housing.
