8The Daily Tar HeelThursday, November 5, 1987 Sports 'Fannin (Br comM toe clesnredl of From Associated Press reports Prosecutors in Prince George's County, Md., arc "seriously consid ering" dropping murder charges against record-holding former UNC running back Derrick Fenner, two sources close to the case said Wednesday. The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said county police now believe Fenner was telling the truth when he said he was not at the scene of a drug-related fatal shooting in May. I believe they are senously con sidering dropping the charges, based on what they now know," said one source familiar with the investigation. A spokeswoman for Prince George's County State's Attorney jMex Williams said Williams will meet this week with prosecutors handling Fenner's case and had not decided Whether to drop the charges. ! "He's not going to make any Comments until he gets all the information," said spokeswoman Alexis Revis. ' Fenner, 20, is charged with first- ism women's Top 2 .1. Another teenager was wounded. Hyattsville city police said at the time that the shooting arose from a drug "turf war." Fenner and three other men, one of them a boyhood friend of Fenner's, were indicted in September in the shooting. Fenner, of Oxon Hill, Md., also faces drug and weapons charges in another case, unrelated to the shooting. North Carolina athletic director John Swofford was cautious about the news. "Coach (Dick) Crum and I are aware of the story which appeared in this morning's Washington Post," Swofford said in a prepared state ment. "We certainly hope this story is true. He also gained 216 yards against the Citadel and 173 yards against Maryland. He was suspended from UNC and his scholarship was withdrawn earlier this year after he failed two of his classes. He had been studying and planned to return to the school this year when he was arrested. According to a police report, a witness identified Fenner as the gunman in the May shooting. Defense lawyers said they have been meeting recently with prosecutors about the murder case but have no commitments. "I do believe they are very seriously reconsidering their position," said Joel Worshtil, one of Fenner's law yers. "But it is fully within their jurisdiction to determine that one way or another." Fenner, who is free on $100,000 bond, is scheduled to go on trial Dec. 7. He has called the charges against Tix distribution changed From staff reports There have been subtle and yet important changes in the ticket distribution policy for basketball this season. Like last year, each student may pick up his ticket and another student's ticket by presenting his valid ID, registration card and athletic pass along with the same articles of the other student. Groups of 20 to 40 people may send a representative to sign up for a block between 8 a.m. and 12 noon on the Thursday before distribution. Suc cessful blocks may pick up their tickets between noon and 5 p.m. on Friday. This year, there will be no block seating for either the Feb. 11 contest with N.C. State or the Feb. 28 clash with Clemson. The biggest difference from last year is that tickets will be distributed between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Sundays. This Sunday, Nov. 8, tickets will be available for the Tar Heels' Nov. 23 game with the USSR national team and for the Dec. 3 meeting with Stetson. Unlike last year, the distribution of tickets for non-conference games will not be totally random. Rather, Avoid the lottery blues. Apply now' All apartments on the bus line to UNC. According to the sources, informa tion supporting Fenner's alibi has been turned over to prosecutors by Prince George's County police, who followed up on the investigation originially done by Hyattsville city police. The city police department is a separate agency of about 25 officers within the county. "From the beginning, Derrick and his counsels have taken the position that he is totally innocent. It looks as if there was a mistake," said Fred Joseph, Fenner's other lawyer. "This young man has been through months of hell." Hyattsville police, who did the original investigation that led to Fenner's arrest, had no comment. The Washington Post reported in its Wednesday editions that two detectives in charge of the Leach shooting have been reassigned to uniformed patrol duties. Hyattsville police lieutenant Wayne McCully said the assignment had nothing to do with the shooting. lower deck tickets will be distributed first, on a random basis, and then upper tickets will be distributed in order of quality of the seats. For conference games, all lower deck tickets will be mixed with the best upper deck tickets and distributed randomly. The remaining upper level seats will be given out in order. In other ticket news, the sports schedule for this Saturday, Nov. 7,. has been scrambled in order to cater to the whims of television. ESPN has decided to televise the UNC-Clemson football game, and to get the money ESPN will pay, the school has pushed back the start of the game to 4 p.m. Portable lights will be brought into Kenan Stadium. That decision has also had an impact on events in the Smith Center. The women's basketball team will now play the USSR national wom en's team at 1 p.m. in the Smith Center, while the first Blue-White game of the season will be played at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available for both contests. i utyr? latlg (Far Metl ClasslfDed Adveirfosoimg Classified Info The Dally Tar Heel does not accept cash for payment of clas sified advertising. Strong teams ffigM for touiraey crown By CHRIS SPENCER Assistant Sports Editor For the UNC men's soccer team, the second half of its season begins Thursday night when it takes the field against Clemson at 8 p.m. in the first round of the inaugural ACC Men's Soccer Tournament. UNC coach Anson Dorrance has said that the Tar Heels need to win one tournament game in order to receive their first NCAA tounament berth since 1968. UNC defeated the Tigers 2-1 in Chapel Hill back in September. But Clemson has improved con siderably since then and is cur rently No. 12 in the nation. The Tigers are led by senior forward Bruce Murray, a shoo-in for All-ACC honors and a can didate for Player of the Year in the conference. "Obviously, weVe got a tough road ahead of us, having to face Clemson, and if we were to advance, Virginia," Dorrance said. "The team is looking forward to the challenge. We're ranked fourth in our region behind South Carol ina, Duke and Clemson, but weVe beaten two of the three." Before the Clemson-UNC match, third-seeded Maryland takes on sixth-seeded Wake Forest at 6 p.m. The Terrapins, whose 2-0 defeat of UNC was the Tar Heels' worst loss of the year, are a very strong team, despite their 8-6-4 record. And with a 3-2-1 mark in the strongest soccer league in the nation, the Terps have proven that they are for real. Wake Forest finished 5-12-2, 1-4-1 in the ACC. The Deacons are led by freshman forward Nigel McNamara, who hails from Pres ton, England. McNamara has tallied seven goals thus far this season, including two against UNC in a 4-2 loss. The first match of the opening round pits second-seeded and defending national champion Duke against seventh-seeded N.C. LOST: BLACK LEATHER JACKET, Mon. 1026, 5th floor Davis Lib. Please return. Since a season-opening 2 1 loss to UNC, the Blue Devils have turned a so-called rebuilding year into their most successful ACC campaign since 1982. Duke senior goalkeeper Mark Dodd has had an outstanding year, allowing just those two goals against the Tar Heels in ACC play, and he could be all-conference. A sure bet for that honor is Tom Stone, the Blue Devils' excellent forward, who has netted eight goals this season. N.C. State is a very interesting team, featuring an excellent two punch offense with speedy for wards Chibuzor Ehilegbu and Tab Ramos. Besides the win over UNC, the Wolfpack has tied Clemson 2-2. They were blown out by Duke, 5 0, in a match where a linesman had a heart attack. They also lost to Maryland, 2-0. Of course, one team is missing from this largely equal group of teams: the second-ranked team in the nation, Virginia. The Cavaliers finished the ACC season 5-0-1, 16-1-2 overall. On the offensive side of the ball, senior forward John Harkes will probably win the ACC Player of the Year award, and with little wonder: Harkes has scored 15 goals this season and added four assists, for an incredible 34 points. But the Cavaliers could be ripe for an upset. They squeaked by both Maryland and Clemson with one-goal victories, and only beat UNC 2-0 on a very questionable foul in the Tar Heel penalty box. This tournament has been a long time coming. It showcases some of the best talent in the country, certainly the best gath ering of top teams. The Tar Heels do have a long road ahead of them if they are to make it to Sunday's finale. But they match up well with Clemson and, if they play their best, may very well wind up with the crown.
