Leather Nun's musical habits run to traditional rock W roll By SCOTT COWEN Stiff Writer Leather Nun is a band that may be relatively unknown even to the most knowledgeable music enthusi ast. However, this six-man band out of Sweden is on its way up and will open for Echo and the Bunnymen next month at Duke. "(We're) the last rock V roll band," said Joans Alnquist, lead singer for the group, who describes himself as a "rock V rollish Frank Sinatra." Many critics in Europe seem to agree and have pegged Alnquist as a young old blue eyes. As for the rest of the band, Alnquist said, "We're individ uals with five different tastes and styles." He added that the group was a "melting pot" that mirrors what is happening in music today but which has its roots in rock V roll. The group got its name when the members were waiting on a tram before their first gig. Alnquist said that they needed a name before the gig, and when he saw a nun, the name Leather Nun just struck him. In the beginning the name didn't really mean anything, but he said that today, "It sums up the band really Campus Calendar The DTH Campus Calendar is a daily listing of University-related activities sponsored by academic departments, student services, and student organizations offi calty recognized by the Division of Student Affairs. It brings to mind the dark side as well as the pure innocence of a nun." The band was formed almost nine years ago, during the heyday of new wave, when Alnquist was signed to release a single and needed a band. Since then Leather Nun has been touring Europe and the United Kingdom, but the group never signed with a major label until recently. Alnquist said that the band used to release its own recordings. Lacking a manager until last year, the group had no one to handle the business side. Today Leather Nun has signed with I.R.S., and the latest Nun album is entitled Force of Habit. Nun also has an album out in Europe called Steel Construction which is slated to hit the States in about six months. Alnquist said that the band is big in the U.K. and that in America it has a "growing following, (especially) in New York, San Fransisco and Los Angeles" which was aided by a release on Subterranean Records a few years back. "It's amazing. In Europe, weVe never been labeled as one kind of band," Alnquist said.. "I'm not sure about how it will be here, but in Europe the crowds were made up of college students, punks, bikers, every kind of people. Everyone gets their own part." According to Alnquist, Leather Nun is a band of "six typical Swedish boys." He described Nun as "the ultimate new wave punk band" that is determined to go all the way and never compromise. Alnquist points out that U2 never did, and now Bono and Company are getting enormous recognition. He hopes the same will hold true for Leather Nun. Lower prices and convenience are the main reasons for the mail order prescriptions' success, said Marcia Codling, a consultant for Arthur D. Little, a Cambridge consulting firm. These drugs are typically 25 percent cheaper. Customers can buy mail-order prescriptions in high volume and substitute generic brands for name brands. Elderly people who take large amounts of medication are the main consumers of this service, according to Little research. hi ? "Mail-order prescriptions have their good and bad points," said Jean Gagnon, UNC professor of pharmacy administration. "The main thing with the community pharmacist is the contact. A cus tomer can ask a pharmacist ques tions about storage and instructions. "Mail-orders provide some directions," he added. "But it's impersonal, and what if the cus tomers have more questions?" The customer has to weigh the value of saving money and contact with the pharmacist, he said. John Woodard, the pharmacist at Sutton's Drugstore on Franklin Street, said, "People should pick out a pharmacist like they pick out a doctor." He said it is more important to have someone mon itoring a person's drug use than to save money. Also, pharmacists know exactly what drugs the customer is taking. "People don't need to go through the mail," he said. Prices are already competitive enough, he added.
