Tar Heels tooumce back,
tBurasUn Btae Devi!Q 35-6
By JIM MUSE
Assistant Sports Editor
The 13th-ranked UNC wrestling
team bounced back from last week's
bitter loss to N.C. State and tho
roughly whomped visiting Duke in
a 35-6 runaway Tuesday night.
The Blue Devils were not expected
to be much of a challenge, so 15th
year Tar Heel coach Bill Lam wanted
to use the match as an opportunity
for his team to work on its execution.
I wanted us to work on our offense
and our pin holds, but we still need
some work there," he said.
The match began well as 118
pound junior Neal Burkhead upped
his record to 7-8-1, 1-1 in the ACC,
by trouncing Duke's Chris Keene in
a major decision, 9-1.
Duke then showed some talent that
gave them a surprising 6-4 lead as
they took a pair of tight decisions at
the 126- and 134-pound classes. But
unfortunately for the Blue Devils,
that was all they would get.
Junior Enzo Catullo put a quick
stop to Duke's hot streak as he
nabbed a tough 5-3 decision over a
spunky ex-marine, Chuck Egerton.
The decision regained the lead for
UNC at 7-6, and that proved to be
all the Tar Heels would need.
The 150-pound class marked the
return of senior Lenny Bernstein, who
had been out since November with
a knee injury. The Ail-American
wasted no time in showing that he
was still one of the nation's top
wrestlers, immediately attacking
outclassed Jim Amerman, who
remained pretty much at Bernstein's
mercy.
Leading 12-3, Bernstein took
Amerman to the mat with 23 seconds
left in the match for the first pin of
the night.
Senior Stocky Cabe, a little-used
but talented senior, showed that he
could hold his own by trouncing his
opponent, Hank Karsen. Cabe took
an advantage after just eight seconds
and needed only 1:21 to pin Karsen
in grand fashion.
Freshman Jay Landolfo, who
usually wrestles at 158, moved up a
weight class, to 167, and provided the
most spectacular match of the night
by picking his man up off the mat
and throwing him down on five
separate occasions. Landolfo's 17-4
superior decision upped his record to
11-6, 2-0 for the year, and gave the
TarHeels an almost insurmountable
23-6 lead.
Senior three-time All-American
Rob Koll got a chance to strut his
stuff not one, but two weights, up.
Koll, the number one wrestler in the
nation at 158 pounds, took on Duke's
Jim Walsh at" 177. After Koll moved
to a 10-0 lead, including a near-pin
for almost forty seconds, he finally
put Walsh out of his misery with a
pin at 6:12.
At 190 pounds, Glen Pazinko
provided a little drama (emphasis on
little) as he fell behind quickly by two
points but worked back to a 6-2 lead
with some nice moves. After several
opportunities, he couldn't quite pin
opponent Brad Weber but still got
the 6-2 decision to up his record to
18-10, 1-1.
Sophomore heavyweight Pat
Crowley took the closest win of the
night, a two-pointer over Duke's Rob
Kostrebski. With the score tied at 3-
3, Kostrebski's second stall resulted
in a stall point for Crowley and gave
him a 4-3 lead with just 17 seconds
left. With riding time, Crowley got
a 5-3 decision to close out the match
and up the Tar Heels' record to 8-
4, 1-1.
Lam seemed to be a bit relieved
with the win, seeing as how some of
the closer matches were a bit too close
for comfort, but was very happy with
his team's effort.
"As of right now we're looking
towards Clemson," he said. "They're
tough down in the lower weights, and
they have a couple of kids that we
had recruited."

UPPER MARLBORO, Md.
The trial of former North Carolina
football star Derrick Fenner on drug
and weapons charges was indefinitely
postponed Monday, and Fenner's
lawyer said he felt sure charges
against his client would be dropped.
I am confident Derrick will come
out of this case with no criminal
record whatsoever," Fred Joseph said
after meeting in the chambers of
Circuit Court Judge Jacob Levin to
ask for the postponement.
"I believe that will happen. I will
be having discussions with prosecu
tors and the court on a continuous
basis. It's conceivable that this can
be resolved without a trial."
Fenner already has made one trip
through the county court system. He
was charged with murder in connec-

November, saying they didn't have
evidence placing Fenner at the scene.
But Fenner, a former star tailback,
still had to face charges stemming
from a traffic stop in his hometown
of Oxon Hill on April 6.
Fenner was accused of illegally

a .38-caliber revolver and ammuni

Fenner's jacket pocket.

RALEIGH Shoe contracts
worth more than $100,000 for some
college basketball coaches should be
replaced by tenure to supplement
coaches' incomes, North Carolina
coach Dean Smith said Tuesday.
Smith was one of several coaches
commenting on shoe contracts during
a teleconference with ACC coaches
after an Atlanta newspaper reported
that Georgia Tech's Bobby Cremins
had agreed to a $160,000 contract
with Nike last week.
"There certainly appears to be (a
double standard)," Smith said. "I was
one of the last ones to ever have a
type of contract. Then, I went to the
university and shared the money with
them.
"No. 1, you are a professor," added
Smith, who said he signed his shoe
contract six years ago. "But you don't
have tenure. I think it would be a
good tradeoff to have tenure (instead

Cremins called the Friday report
by The Atlanta Constitution "sensa
tional news."
Cremins is in the last of a four
year contract with Converse that has
paid him about $72,000 annually, the
newspaper reported.
"I'm looking forward to finishing
the year with Converse," Cremins
said Tuesday. "At the end of the year
IH sit down and look at things. All
that (report) was was sensational
journalism."
Kevin Brown, corporate commun
ications director of Nike, said the
company gives colleges about 100
pairs of shoes each year but players
are riot required to wear the brand
that their coach promotes.
Cliff Ellis, Clemson's head coach,
said a coach's shoe contract is no
different than the contracts profes
sional athletes sign.
"The importance of a shoe contract
is that it's lucrative in regard to name
association no different than a
professional athlete," Ellis said. "The
thing that is important is having a
good shoe for your players to utilize."
