Laura Snideman Laura Snideman, a freshman his tory major from Menlo Park, Calif., has announced her candidacy for Student Congress (Dist. 16). Increasing student involvement and interaction and dealing with racial tensions are specific concerns to students on South Campus, Snide man said. "The races are really separated on South Campus and this problem needs to be looked into next year," she said. Continuing forums and social functions will help students to feel more involved, she said. If elected, Snideman said she plans to conduct a survey to ask specific questions about student problems. "I want to be informed of constit uent concerns so that I can take this information into the budgeting pro cess," she said. Student apathy and South Campus isolation can be remedied with a good student rapport and increased activ ities on South Campus, said Sundwall. "If students bring me their con cerns, I will take them back to congress," Sundwall said. "Thus, congress and students will become more integrated, and student apathy will not be a problem." . There needs to be more activities held in the South Campus Union and residence halls so that people will come to South Campus for entertain ment, Sundwall said. Sundwall said he endorses funding of the Carolina Gay and Lesbian Association. "I think it is a bad precedent to defund any group especially a group viewed as a minority, and they are the most responsible with their money," Sund- District 17 Shellie Berlin Shellie Berlin, a junior from Mem phis, Tenn., has announced her candidacy for Student Congress (Dist. 17). "I feel sometimes that Student Congress is an on-campus organiza tion," Berlin said. "I want to make sure that the off-campus views are conveyed in Student Congress." Berlin said she wants to ensure that parking times for off-campus stu dents do not keep being shortened. She added that better lighting on campus is needed, particularly around Davis Library and in parking areas. Berlin said she will sponsor a referendum requiring the Board of Trustees to notify students of impend ing tuition increases prior to the end of the semester preceding the planned increase. Berlin said she spent last semester Mary Lisa Pories Mary Pories, a junior international studies major from Greenville, has announced her candidacy for Student Congress (Dist. 17). Increasing Student Congress fund ing for S.A.F.E. Escort service, getting better lighting on campus and having the city noise ordinance lifted are all major concerns for District 17, Pories said. "I would like to see a committee with Student Congress formed to negotiate a compromise with the city on the noise ordinance," she said. "Fraternity and sorority houses in my district want the noise ordinance lifted." If elected, Pories said she would try to ensure better lighting on campus near Morehead Planetarium and the Arboretum. Better lighting and increased funds for S.A.F.E. Escort should help increase the safety of women on campus, she said. District 18 Gene Davis Gene Davis, a sophomore from Raleigh, is running for re-election to Student Congress (Dist. 18). Davis said he will work to improve the overall quality of the University. "I want to improve the University for the students so that when they graduate, their degrees from UNC will be more valuable than they are now," he said. Davis said his platform contains , two basic goals: adding staff to the admissions office and decreasing the 1 power of the Educational Foundation j (Rams Club). "They (Rams Club members) seem to control everything at this Univer sity," he said. "The University is for the students and not for the alumni per se." He is chairman of the Ethics Committee and, a District 19 Harry Bleattler Harry Bleattler, a junior! from Chapel Hill, is running for election to Student Congress (Dist. 19. "The thing that prompted me to run is my interest in the ost of textbooks, why we pay so much," said Bleattler. "I believe students deserve some sort of inquiry. I want to know where our money goes." McNeill said he hopes to involve Student Govern ment and Student Health Service in .this project. Another issue McNeill said he plans to focus on is the problem of student parking on campus. "I would like to see the adminis tration take action with the parking problem," he said. "The administra tion should make finding funds for the parking deck a major priority."
