Irish
festivities

Somehow, Chapel Hill has never
struck me as a bastion of Irish
blood. Boston? Without a doubt.
New York? Certainly. But Chapel
Hill? What the average UNC stu
dent knows about the political
situation in Ireland today could
probably be written on the back
of a postage stamp.
St. Patrick's Day is different, of
course. No matter that Irish green
clashes with Carolina blue any
problems of satorial elegance will
disappear once the alcohol begins
to flow. For those punters who
want more than simple over
indulgence, however, many of the
local clubs are putting on Irish
music for tonight, although the
University has vetoed plans for U2
to play at the Cave; they felt that
students would be too busy stud
ying for their finals in May.
in an act of deliberate defiance
to the University, the Cave is going
ahead with a St. Patrick's Day
party beginning at about 9:30 pm,
and on the off-chance that U2
does not appear, featured artists
of the night will be Bob vasile, Fred
Boyce. Zan Mcleod, and Jane
Peppier. Plenty of traditional Irish
fun is promised.
Also tonight, Cat's Cradle is
hosting Mary On The Dash's St.
Patrick's Day party. The Cradle is
presently threatening to intro
duce Irish beer specials, but it will
be interesting to discover if any
true Irish Guinness will be on sale.
It's stronger and thicker than its
American cousin there are few
better ways of spending an even
ing than to sit in a British Pub and
chew on a few slices of Guinness.
The experience is well worth
repeating over here.
For those who are not so con
cerned with Irish music, but simply
want to sample the liquid side of
the celebrations, Michael Klesh and
Lisa Jo Tuchek will be playing
country music at Pyewacket Res
taurant; and at Under The Street
in Durham, Danny Coleman will be
playing traditional jazz any
references to "Irish jazz" on fly
posters around town are a less-than-serious
attempt by the man
agement to atone for the sin of
forgetting that Thursday is St.
Patrick's Day.
Those rare students who can
enjoy celebrations and parties
without falling under the influ
ence of alcohol have a choice
between the Skylight Cafe and the
Columbia Street Coffee Shop,
neither of which serve alcohol. The
Skylight is playing host to Barney
Pilgrim and his Irish Jigs, and
Columbia Street is resisting the
urge to put on Irish music; instead,
Tracy Drach and David Bennett will
play a set of swing, blues, and
originals. However, Columbia
Street will be selling some Irish
sodabread to patrons.
The ArtsCenter in Carrboro,
having had traditional Irish musi
cians Patrick Street play during
Spring Break, will be paid a visit
by the Hancock Chamber Quartet,
America's only trio of oboe, horn,
and piano, and thus distinctly un
Irish. Featuring Lisa Kozenko, Mar
tin Webster, and Dana Burnett, the
show will begin at 8 p.m.
With so much emphasis on
alcohol during St. Patrick's Day, it
might well be impossible for
anyone going out tonight to avoid
cries of "Begorrah!," and "Brits Out!
Brits Out of Ireland!," especially
because so many punters feel the
urge to drink until their faces are
the same color as an Irish sham
rock. There is, however, enough
going on for everybody to be abie
to celebrate Ireland's patron saint.
Of course, the obvious question to
ask is why is St. Patrick's Day more
ceiebated than that of St. George,
St. David, or St. Andrew? But that's
another article. Maybe it will be
answered during the celebrations
for Bernie's Day. Bernie never
made a saint, but he could drink
St. Patrick under the table any day
of the week.
