"The Dead" (PC)
James Joyce's "Dubliners" short
story is adapted faithfully and
wonderfully to the screen for John
Huston's final film. Set in the
changing Ireland of 1904, the story
explores the emotional relation
ships among a group gathered for
an annual Epiphany dinner party,
and the passion that inextricably
links the living with the dead. It
is abstract to the point of meriting
several viewings to capture ever
ything the film puts across, but
this is not a criticism. Exemplary
performances by all and masterful
direction by the late Huston make
"The Dead" a most beautiful film.

Donal McCann. 87 minutes, varsity:

"Hope and Glory" (PC-1 3)
Nominated for five Academy
Awards, including Best Picture and
Best Director, this is John Boor
man's hilarious autobiographical
film of his family's struggles
through world War ll in a blitzed
London. The story is largely seen
through the eyes of Boorman as
a 7-year-old boy, excellently por
trayed by Sebastian Rice-Edwards.
The war ensures that nothing will
ever be the same again for anyone,
least of all the Rowan family. At
one level this movie has an epic
feel, but Boorman's pastiche cap
tures all the fears and hopes of
the times in an intimate style. The

With the advent of spring,
delivery pizza should be outlawed,
instead, a short walk down Frank
lin Street will redefine the pizza
experience.
instant transformation for the
age-old college delicacy? The idea
seems ludicrous, but entirely
within the realm of a restaurant
which, next to its posted menu,
issues the following warning:
"Attention customers no sque
aling . . . Any squealers will be
served via sausage."
Squeal about what? Have Frank
lin Street eateries turned to the
theatre of the absurd for enter
tainment instead of the tradi
tional jukebox? Or do Pepper's
customers know something that
the rest of Chapel Hill doesn't?
At Pepper's Pizza, the answer to
both questions is yes. The place
sometimes borders on the edge of
the absurd, but, more impor
tantly, it serves hot, fresh pizza
with a wide variety of toppings.
As any college connoiseur
knows, Chapel Hill has more
options for pizza than it does
BMW's. But with delivery, the joys
of eating out seem to be forgot
ten except by Pepper's, it
presents a pizza restaurant which
presents all the comforts of home:
pizza, TV, a stereo, tables and
chairs - but without the stench
constructed on an airstrip in the
English midlands that slowly gets
destroyed in the ensuing blitz.

"Frantic" (R)
This is a dreadful f ilm that would
be laughable were it not for the
fact that it was made by Roman
Polanski and stars Harrison Ford.
"Frantic" tells the story of an
American surgeon whose wife is
kidnapped and of his supposedly
frantic search for her, but frankly,
the audience is more frantic for
this ridiculously long film to endr
To be fair to Ford (though he
hardly deserves it), he really has
nothing to work with. Ignore all
comparisons to Hitchcock and all
notices that proclaim this to be
as good as "Chinatown." Some
scenes are so bad it's embarrassing.

"Moonstruck" (PC)
Cher, Nicholas Cage and a host

star in this wonderful comedy
about a widow who falls in love

iness by Norman Jewison. Nomi
nated for six Academy Awards,
including Best Picture, Best Direc
tor, Best Actor and Best Actress.

offers meatballs, jalapeno peppers,
broccoli and artichoke hearts.
Prices range from $6.50 for a
medium cheese pizza to $1 3.50 for
a large with everything. Pizza by
the slice starts at 95 cents for
cheese, and can be decorated for
30 cents each additional topping.

"Motrins" (R)
Richard Pryor and Randy Quaid
star in a comedy about the night
mares of relocation, if the pre
views are anything to go by, not
highly recommended. 90 minutes.

"Good Morning Vietnam" (R)
Robin Williams is, of course, very
funny, but as a comment on the
Vietnam War, Barry Levinson's film
makes little overall sense. The
movie is inconsistent, and so the
dichotomy of comedy and real-life
horrors neither mixes nor clashes
effectively, though some scenes
certainly are lump-in-the-throat
material. It's disappointing,
although it has earned Williams an
Academy Award nomination for
Best Actor. 119 minutes. Plaza:
2:30, 4:45, 7:05 and 9:25 p.m. only. .
"Off Limits" (R)

"Masquerade" (R)

a tale of betrayal and murder in

olives is topped with an Italian
dressing which makes a spicy
statement without presenting a
fire hazard for $1.95.
Pepper's doesn't leave you
standing on dry ground, either.
The beer ranges in price from 80
cents for Natty Bo to $1.65 for
imported, in the non-alcoholic
realm, soft drinks and root beer
abound. Choices are somewhat
limited, but coke and beer com
plement pizza the same way milk
does for cookies.
But the food is not the only way

best of last year, this Swedish film
tells the bittersweet story of
ingemar, a 12-year-old boy who
to enjoy Pepper's. No customer's
visit could be complete without
his enjoying the fine TV program
ming which today's networks
have provided or listening to the
wide variety of music, usually
"progressive," on CD or tape. But
the real entertainment is on the
walls.
Eating at Pepper's seems to
necessitate leaving a profound
message to the world on its walls,
just as eating at the Rat necessi
tates leaving initials for future
students to discover and for
proud alumni to rediscover. The
