10The Daily Tar HeelMonday, March 21, 1988 Sports Devils, Rsms advance By CHRIS SPENCER Assistant Sports Editor The Smith Center crowd rose up and began clapping to the beat. If it had been two weeks earlier, Bruce Springsteen would have been leading the chorus of "Devil With A Blue Dress On,M but this time it was the Duke pep band blaring out the tune with 8:11 to go in the first half of the Blue Devils 94-77 pasting of Southern Methodist Saturday. The Duke fans, who looked very comfortable in their two games in enemy territory, had good reason to cheer because their team had just run off 13 straight points to take a 31 25 lead over the confused Mustangs. The fifth-ranked Blue Devils never had to worry from then on. Kevin Strickland, who finished with a career-high 31 points, glided force fully down the lane for a layup when play resumed. And by the time of the second chorus with 9:44 to go in the game, Duke led 73-60 and was ready to head to East Rutherford, N.J., site of the East Region finals. As entertaining as Duke's perfor Koll wrestles From staff reports AMES, Iowa Rob Koll can breathe easy now. The senior from State College, Pa., has ended his quest. On Saturday, he won a national championship. In a fitting end to a virtually perfect year, Koll pinned Joe Pantaleo of Michigan in a mere 1:14 to win his first NCAA title, becoming UNC's first four-time Ail-American in the process. He can now boast of a 41-1 record on the year, 38-0 in collegiate com petition, and a career mark of 155-20-1, the best ever in the ACC. Koll's brilliance, however, did not rub off on his teammates. While the Rams turned in a near perfect game, they still had to survive Earl Duncan's last-second three point shot before they could celebrate. From senior guard Tom Garrick's game-opening 18-foot bomb and Carlton Owens' following trey from the left corner, the Rams served notice to the Orangemen that they were the team to beat. By using the firepower of Carlton and Owens and some Kenny Green layups over Syracuse center Rony Seikaly, the Rams pushed to a 37 22 lead at 8:15. Two Seikaly hoops ended the half, but the Rams had a seven-point lead. The Orangemen didn't get to be the third seed for nothing, though, and a Seikaly tap-in at 10:22 tied the game up at 75. But foul trouble would consume forward Derrick Coleman, who fouled out at 5:32, and explosive guard Stevie Thompson, and it would cause Seikaly to finish with four way to title Enzo Catullo, the only other Tar Heel to win his opening-round match, was pinned in the 142-pound quarterfinals by John Smith of Oklahoma State, falling just short of earning AU American honors. Ben Oberly and Glen Pazinko, who were still alive by tournament rules after losing their first-round matches, both lost in the first consolation round. Oberly, at 177 pounds, lost to R.J. Mebe of Nebraska-Omaha, while Pazinko was defeated by Carlton Kinkade of Central Michigan. As a team, the Tar Heels finished the tournament tied for 16th place with Minnesota. M) LATE SHOW SAT. Ram coach Tom Penders decided to go to Green in the second half, and his strategy was brilliant. The sophomore forward, who didn't start and first saw action at the 1 1:58 mark of the first half, tore up the paint for 16 second-half points, many on free throws. But Green's five misses at the charity stripe, and more importantly Garrick's front-end miss of a one-and-one with 12 seconds left, gave the Orangemen a chance at the end. For Syracuse, losing Coleman and Thompson hurt for the end run. Seikaly, who finished his college career with 27 points and 10 rebounds, could only do so much with four fouls, and Matt Roe and Duncan are not exactly instant offense. The against-all-odds stories of Garrick and Owens, who scorched the Orangemen for a combined 46 points on 15-of-28 shooting, are enough to win the Rams many followers if they keep playing so well. Garrick's father is a blind craftsman who has never seen his sons or his wife. Owens is a Brooklyn native who was shot accidentally in the elbow after leaving a party during his junior year in high school. That's why his left elbow flies off to the side when he shoots. "We made a decision midway through the second half to isolate Kenny as much as possible," Penders said. "We're gutty, and they don't think they're going to lose, and I'm not going to tell them any different." The Mustangs' chances rested in the hands of sharpshooting senior guard Kato Armstrong. Of course, defensive whiz Billy King got the assignment, and with the help of his teammates inside, forced Armstrong into 2-of-l 1 shooting in the first half, en route to 6-of-22 for the day for 16 points. But by halftime, the game was over. Carkon . : Kinney and Todd Alexander picked up some of the slack, both finishing with 17 points. But when McKinney fouled out at the 9:28 mark, the Mustangs com pleted their fold. But the Blue Devils have to be happy in that they did all that damage while Danny Ferry suffered through a 5-for-14 shooting day, scoring just 14 points. In his place, Robert Brickey threw in 17 points, many on slam dunks, King added 12 and reserve Alaa Abdelnaby muscled his way for 13. "I don't know if we can play too much better than we did in the last 10 minutes of the first half," Duke coach Mike Kryzyewski said of his team's 21-7 run. mm HARRISON FORD FRANTIC Em-mlh -I 7:( IUI nuan f 1111 I a I t: 6 Academy Award Nominations! Reid and company continue their march to Kansas City, the UNC fencing team heads north to Princeton for the week-long NCAA tournament. The first three days of the tour nament will be devoted to women's competition, where the Tar Heels will be able to showcase a strong starting five that led the team to a 14-5 finish in the regular season. Their record earned the women a national at-large bid and the ninth seed in a field of 12. UNC faces Wayne State and Harvard in the first round, where they need a win over either team to advance to the second round. Although a victory over top-seeded Wayne may be out of the Heels' reach, coach Ron Miller is confident of his team's chances against the Crimson. "We have a significant chance to beat (Harvard)," he said. "I feel pretty confident. We're finally healthy and we have all five starters making the trip." The other NCAA-bound fencers are juniors Cheryl Gates and Ashley Grabs, and senior Mary Ronald. Miller is realistic about UNC V chances against national contenders Wayne State, Notre Dame and the University of Pennsylvania. "I'd like to hit the top five, but we could get boxed out," he said. "An honest guess would be somewhere between five and eight." Miller is more cautious in his predictions about the men's finish in a tournament that, unlike the wom en's competition, favors individual rather than team performances. "I feel like we should do well," he said. "If we could get one man in each weapon into the round of 1 6 we could be top five." They will be followed on Friday by Dave Merkel and Phil Moschella, the team's representatives in the foil division. Perhaps the Tar Heels' best chance at " tournament success , will be on Saturday when epee fencers Pete Farquhar and Ravi Sawhney take the floor in Princeton. The epee team comes off a victory over Columbia's epee squad, the Lions' only loss of the season, two weeks ago in New York City. Although UNC lost the overall match, Sawhney proved himself a force to be reckoned with by going undefeated against the top ranked Ivy League powerhouse. Miller admits that his team is a longshot, with sophomore Farquhar being the only Tar Heel with previous NCAA experience. "Attitude-wise, we're in good shape, physically we're in good shape," he said. "We have an outside shot. If we're hot we could do it."
