The UNC Inter-Fraternity and
Panhellenic councils are joining
forces to raise money for the Line
berger Cancer Research Center
during the first Greek Week Benefit.
Thirty-two sororities and fraterni
ties have planned activities for March
21-28, including an a cappella con
cert, human charades, a comedy act,
a step show and a battle of the bands.
"The Lineberger Center is
nationally recognized for the services
it provides in cancer research, and it
is a vital part of the University and
medical community," said Leah

"We feel that the center more than
deserves our attention and funds
because of the esteem it has brought
the University and its need for funds

The main sources of revenue will

is an enlightened and humane project,
and I support it with enthusiasm."
The benefit is designed to "raise
money for the Lineberger Center,
promote inter-fraternal and inter
sororal relations and foster relations
between Greeks and administrative
faculty," said Brent Milgrom, pres
ident of the Inter-Fraternity Council
and benefit co-chairman.
Another goal of the benefit is to
improve the image of Greek organ
izations, Totten said.

Universal themes involve audience in play
Recurring and repressive are the
cycles of life as lived by characters
in "History of a Staircase." The Lab
Theatre's current production, this
drama by Antonio Buero-Vallejo
portrays life in a run-down Spanish
apartment house over the span of
three generations of inhabitants.
Never before has "History" been
performed in English. Director Susy
Layer translated the work from its
original Spanish and adapted it for
Lab production.
The play seems well-suited to the
physical conditions of the Lab Thea
tre in that the focal prop the
staircase easily fits in Graham
Memorial's minute basement theater.
The closed-in atmosphere also
reflects the theme of entrapment,
which runs through the play, as well
as the feeling of being in a stairwell.
The idealism of youth and the
disillusionment and bitterness that
come with aging are other themes
central to the play. Characters dream
and romance, struggle with poverty
and resentment, watch their parents
die and their children repeat their own
lives. But as life goes on, the staircase
remains constant.
All action takes place on the stairs
leading up to the four apartments
where the characters live. The people
involved are amazingly public and do
everything out in the stairwell, from
proposing marriage to smoking to
grieving the death of a spouse.
Considering how central the staircase
is to their lives, the most common
threat is to throw someone down the
stairs, and the most common w ay of
defusing a conflict is to go inside an
apartment.
"History" is an ensemble work
without a genuine star. Kasey Jones
makes her character, Paca the loud
mouthed gossip, a standout. Jones
ages well, making Paca feisty and
formidable in middle age and infuri
atingly feeble as an old woman.
Paca's family includes her son
Urbano as the worker who pins his
hopes on unionization, her daughter
Trini as the "good girl" and old maid,
and her daughter Rosa as the scan
dalous flirt who winds up with a lousy

In the past, sororities and frater

One of the neighbors is Fernando

because it costs each group $500 plus

The councils sponsor a charity that
lacks funds from other resources,
Milgrom said. They often choose a
local charity to create community
relations with fraternities and
sororities.
On Monday, March 21, the Greek
Week Benefit will begin with a
bloodmobile sponsored by the coun
cils and Alpha Phi Omega.
Tuesday's activities include a
balloon liftoff in the Pit and a Greek
night out at local bars.
Wednesday will feature a cappella
singing by the Four Corners and the
Earman is convincingly bitchy as his
wife Elvira, and Stacey Evans comes
across as downright spaced-out as his
dishrag girlfriend Carmina. Fernan
do's friend Urbano is well-played by
Andy Ward who brings a certain
good-old-boy quality to the role.
The subject matter of "History" is
fairly heavy material, and at times the
acting is rather overdone, especially
in the romantic scenes. Luckily, there
are a few humorous touches, mostly
ironic, which lighten the overall mood
somewhat. The fact that the audience
does not become too emotionally
involved with the individual charac
ters also keeps the work from being
hopelessly weighed down with gloom.
Arguing is something the cast can
really do well, a good thing consid
ering at least half of the play's action

in "History of a Staircase"
is argument. The final showdown'
between households, in which every
body comes out into the stairwell, is
a verbal slugfest. The audience's close
proximity-to the action make the
bickering all the more realistic; there
is a sense of being in the building and
being annoyed because the no-good
folks next door are airing their
unsightly personal conflicts right out
on the staircase.
"History of a Staircase" is an
interesting play and a worthy addi
tion to the Lab's repertoire. Not
particularly Spanish, the story could
take place in just about any urban
working class setting. The play's life
cycle themes are as universal and as
alternately exhilarating and exhaust
ing as climbing a familiar flight of
stairs.
