UNC met the Wolverines last season in the NCAA Tournament, earning a 109-97 second-round vic tory and pulling away from Michigan at the end of the game. J.R. Reid led the Tar Heels with 27 points. Gary Grant, then a junior, sparked Mich igan with 24 points, while Glen Rice added 22. The Wolverine squad that lost to the Tar Heels, though, has changed fpr the better. The development of Loy Vaught at center and the addition Of Prop 48 casualties Terry Mills and Rumeal Robinson have pushed Michigan into the top echelon of the national ranks. When the Wolverines come to play, they are as fine an offensive team as any in the nation. . ( rm cam mmm mmm WOMEN'S TENNIS vs. Richmond Heels most forget and we went to the Four Corners with three minutes left," Smith said. "I wouldn't mind playing them again if I had my team from last year and they had theirs." Smith, as usual, had nothing but praise for Michigan. "Grant's a senior who will be the first guard picked in the NBA draft," the coach said. "Rice is a junior who would be a lottery pick too if he came out. They have experience but they have two, in Mills and Robinson, that are young but talented." Young and talented is a combina tion about which Smith knows quite a bit. The Tar Heels fit the bill on both counts, and of late have been showing their talent more than their youth. After rolling over North Texas State in the first round, UNC dis mantled Loyola Marymount's offense, pounding the Lions 123-97. In the process of knocking out the darlings of the media, the Tar Heels broke a plethora of NCAA records. But Smith cautioned against over confidence, and made explicit what should have been obvious: that the game against Michigan will be very different from the rollicking rout of Loyola. It would seem safe to say that the Tar Heels will not hit 79 percent of their shots against the Wolverines. "We have to move Michigan out EXTRA 11: 50 LATE SHOW FPI Jt C.AT ROTH FN MS' 4' wtmtim i M r nrcT m i nr iqc7 w "MAGNIFICENT. "They are quick defenders." Whether that quickness will be enough to stop Reid remains uncer tain. Reid, a consensus first-team All American, has played throughout the tournament as if he deserved the honor. He had 29 points and nine rebounds against NTSU and 19 points and 15 boards against the Loyola front line. "North Texas State chose to let him have it down low," Smith said, "and Loyola didn't really defend him. I don't think they stopped him (in Salt Lake City). And J.R.'s really come on defensively." Reid, in fact, took the defensive award for his effort against the Lions' Hank Gathers, who was 6-of-17 from the field Saturday. Smith made clear that Reid was very pleased with that honor, which he wins only rarely. Smith, in turn, was pleased with the defensive effort of the team in general. Over the last five games, the Tar Heels' opponents have racked up their five worst shooting percentages of the year. Beginning with the first game of the ACC Tournament, Wake Forest shot 37.9 percent, Maryland 36.7, Duke 36.8, NTSU 33.3 and Loyola 32.1 percent. "We have played good defense over the past five games " Smith said. "I liked our defense in the ACC Tour nament and out west." That defense has resulted in vic tories, and those victories have produced celebrations, celebrations uncharacteristic of UNC squads. Smith reflected on the emotion with which the Tar Heels play this year. "If you depend on that totally, it can't be there," Smith said. "This is a young team. I certainly encourage them to be themselves. I prefer to say to play with enthusiasm." Enthusiasm or emotion, whatever you want to call it, UNC will undoubtedly need it Friday. The Final Four remains distant, but still, it is but two games away. Indiana star to transfer From Associated Press reports After seeing a season of expected glory turn into personal insult, Rick Calloway said goodbye to Bob Knight on Monday. Calloway, who did not start in Indiana's first three games and did not play in the Hoosiers' 72-69 upset loss to Richmond in last Friday's first round of the NCAA East Regional, informed Knight that he is quitting the team Monday and will transfer to another school for his final year of eligibility. The shadows were symbolic of the fortunes of the visiting Old Dominion men's tennis team as the Tar Heels coasted to an 8-1 victory over the Monarchs. UNC men's tennis coach Allen Morris watched his young team dominate the afternoon and improve its spring season record to 10-5. "This is the best the team has played all season," said Morris. "(Old Dominion) is a team that can beat you, and there were some really close matches today, but we played with a lot of confidence and won all but one of them." No. 1 seed Don Johnson easily defeated his Old Dominion coun terpart, David Wolf, 7-5, 6-0. The ODU second seed gave UNC its only defeat. Chris Brown edged UNC sophomore James Krege 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to claim the only victory of the afternoon for the outmanned visiting tennis team. Brown, a native of Dallas, was grateful for the hard fought win. At the third seed, UNC's Tho mas Tanner won in convincing fashion over Old Dominion's Rex Terwilliger, 6-4, 6-0. Tanner, a talented freshman from Rocky Mount, did not expect to take the match so readily. "Old Dominion's three-man was a good player, but I settled down and was able to beat him," said Tanner. UNC swept the final three seeds in the singles matches. Number four John Bristow defeated Shannon Sealey 5-7, 6 1, 6-3. Andre Janasik was taken to three sets before claiming the fifth seed match against Drake Schunck, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. In the sixth seed match, Derek Weilbaecher edged Old Dominion's Scott Steiner 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. "The win against South Caro lina last week has really boosted the team's confidence," Morris said. "The team played very well today in the close matches." Indeed, in the three matches Tuesday that lasted three sets, UNC won two of them. UNC was flawless in the doubles competition as well, winning all three matches without giving up a set to the underdog Old Domin SOFTBALL at Virginia (DH), 2 p.m WOMEN'S TENNIS at N.C. "It took a while for us to get settled down in the first set, but then we started to make some consistent service returns and we were more successful," said Tanner. The second-seeded team of Krege and Bristow also came out slow, but ended in a flourish to defeat Old Dominion's Sealey and Schunck, 7-6, 6-3. At the third seed, Janasik and Kessler des troyed Old Dominion's Sperry and Steinour, 6-1,6-1. Because North Carolina's team is composed largely of freshmen and sophomores, the squad's success has been a pleasant sur prise to many, including the players themselves. "We have done really well this spring, and we have the ability to upset some teams ahead of us," Tanner said. "We are very happy with our record." Morris is also pleased. "We are a young team, but we are improving," he said. "We have a lot to work on, but we could surprise some people down the road."
