14 The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, April 7, 1988 The scoop By AMY CAUJS&SE Staff Writer Welcome to Campus Spotlight. Beginning this week we'll be bring ing you inside information on some of the famous, intriguing, enigmatic or just downright eccentric people on campus that youVe always wanted to get to know. A new one every week, so enjoy it. And who better to start off this auspicious column than Kevin Martin, our newly-elected student body president? "I was the typical freshman," Martin said in a recent interview "My freshman year passed very uneventfully, and it wasnt until I was a sophomore that I began to become more active in campus activities." Martin says that because his high school was so small, he was a little overwhelmed when he arrived at UNC. "Carolina seemed really big to me, and I spent my first year here just getting used to my new surroundings," he says. But during his sophomore year, he became active in campus organizations, pledging Sigma Nu fraternity and CO CO o CO CO II ALL SUNGLASSES $8 OFF o NOW $6 ALL LEATHER SHOES WHILE SUPPLIES vi linwi f45fr ses v5ry jSf GETCJE ANMNG y uSjA JEMS OKjN vwketV y l ubelV aabelV ffv v'iabeiV V8 i?C BTWQ IPT wK 5jy G?Se ANNG REGULAR PRICED MERCHANDISE 157 E. But that's not what he likes to do best he says his favorite pastime is sleeping. "I have such a small amount of free time that I have to use it wisely." But he does admit to sneaking off to the waffle House in Durham when he has the time. Martin also likes sports: "I like playing basketball at the frater nity house," he says. When it conies to meeting new people, Martin says he is often shy, although he tries not to let it Clip 'N Savers M ARC! "I guess that maybe I am a little too serious at times as well." But that doesnt mean he never does anything spontaneously. The ! craziest thing Martin says he's j done is heading to Myrtle Beach' with his best friend on the 4th of ! July two years ago without even thinking about getting a place to stay. "We couldn't find a place when we got there so we just lived in my car," he said, "and woke up every morning at sunrise." Martin doesnt have any favor ite classes, but he named profes sors Jurg Steiner (political science) and Art Benavie (economics) as his favorite professors "because they both take an active initiative in working with students. A good professor can make any class interesting." The title "student body presi dent" may conjure up images of a superman-type individual, but Martin says he's a typical student who wants to make a positive impact on the campus and people around him. 1 I I I o 6' CO CO CD e. 25 I 1 35 $5 OFF I 1 OFF I OFF LEVIS CABIN PLAID DENIM FEVER SHORTS JACKETS Hi SPORTO SNEAKERS BUY ONE SHORT GET 50a OFF ANY T SHIRT to NOW V2 NO HOLDS ALLOWED OF EQUAL OR LESSER VALUE 2340 Hillsborough St., Raleigh IP Student Body President Kevin Martin Need to get away? Roadtrip to Carowinds I By AMY GALLI&03E Staff writer You've seen them. All those J Disney World, Busch Gardens and J even Opreyland commercials. You know: "Europe in your own back yard," "Wish upon a star," and all that. So you think to yourself, it's too far, it's too expensive or (Cod forbid) it's just kid's stuff. Hold on a minute! Before you spend another weekend in Chapel Hill, doing homework and contem- piduny yuui i id v ci, v.uioiuci ciicjl you're only two and a half hours away from our own amusement park - Carowinds. It's not far, it's not expensive and it's definitely not for kids only. If you have spring fever and need to get away from your studies for a day or two, give it a shot Just south of Charlotte, Carowinds offers a full day of sights and sounds and smells for only $15.95. What could be better than a day of sensory overload to make you forget that-final exams are quickly approaching? Whether it's your first visit or your 10th, there is certainly some thing for everyone. Plenty of rides, as always, plus shows and concerts at the Paladium provide more 3 than enough to please any taste. The concerts, which cost $3 to $5, will begin in May. At Carowinds, the question is never what to do, but what to do first. Obviously, you have to check out the rides. Carowinds offers many roller coasters Thunder Road, White Lightning and The Carolina Cyclone, it takes a brave soul to venture onto these rides. ifyou dont. have .such a . winds is a day of fun at a reas-fJnigii3v " ! I , - 1 f DTH Matthew Plyler ture or a strong stomach, there are some rides like the Scooby Doo Roller Coaster and the carousel that might be a better choice. Carowinds boasts two new attractions this season. The first is White water Falls. This ride takes 20 passengers in a boat up a 45 foot lift on water. When the boat reaches the top, it makes a U-turn and plunges into a lake at the bottom. The impact creates a wall of water that soaks everyone, including observers. The other new attraction is called Cinema 180-Degree Theatre, an action adventure movie shown on a round screen. The movie, called "Impact," surrounds the observers, making them feel a part of the action. With all of this fun only a short drive away, what other excuse does one need for putting off that philosophy paper until Sunday night? Even if you want to stay overnight, it's still a reasonable proposition. Comfort inn beside the park offers double rooms starting at $40.95. The price of food in the park is comparable to that of Lenoir Hall. You can get a hot dog and soda for around $3. Get away from your studies for a day and spend only about $20? It's a dream within reach - Caro- 968-1233 837-2474
