X DTHAmy Hamilton Maryland's Pete McHugh dives back to first base under Chris Lauria's outstretched glove in Sunday's game Football from page 1 Saturday, he milled about in shorts and a jersey, seemingly at ease with the current situation. "The shoulder's coming on fine," he said. "It's about three weeks before I can throw. If all goes well, by June everything should be okay. As long as it's there by Sept. 3 (when the Tar Heels will open against South Carolina)." May, who bears an uncanny phys ical resemblance to last year's starter Mark Maye, said he was pleased with his progress thus far. "I felt all right out there," he said. "I don't want to say I felt nervous, but I didn't know what to expect. I had all day to throw the ball anyone could have behind the line I had." The Blue squad was just too good for the second-teamers, and under standably so. The experienced Blue offensive line repeatedly opened big gaps for speedy backs Torin Dorn and Aaron Staples. After Matt Anderson was just short from 52 yards on an opening drive field-goal attempt for the Whites, the Blues marched 65 yards, capping it off with a four-yard Dorn touchdown run. After the first score, Blue defensive back Victor Bullock snared an errant Scott McAlister pass near midfield and brought it back to the White 22. A few plays later. May hit a wide open Clark in the left corner of the end zone for a 14-point lead. Staples capped off the next drive IrEJI with a seven-yard run for paydirt, and the Blues led 21-0. After a Cannon Watson 40-yard field goal, the Blues quickly put another fast-break score on the board on the very first play of their next possession. May handed off to Dorn, who then handed off to Marriott coming over from the right sideline. The junior speedster from Wendell then shifted into overdrive, finally slamming on the brakes 69 yards later for a 31-0 lead. Brown said that in order to play with such teams as Oklahoma, Auburn and South Carolina, all of whom are on next year's UNC schedule, the Tar Heels must improve in two basic areas. "We feel like we've got to be stronger,'1 he said. "That means we really need to put a lot of work in our weightlifting program. Another thing we've got to do is get faster. We've got some guys who can do that, but we need more." STORAGE New Modern Facility Village Self Storage 515 S. UNC edged Maryland 5-4 as the fun V sun tunes from nearby Ehringhaus field wafted into Bosha mer Stadium. The win put UNC at 21-14 on the year and 7-6 in the ACC race. For the first 3'6 innings, the Tar Heels and Terrapins provided as much action as two senior citizens shagging. The Terrapins managed only two hits in their first four innings, while the Tar Heels got only a Jesse Levis single and a Matt Wooten walk in the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Tar Heels managed to reach Mary land starter Rich Smith. Ron Maurer began with a one-out walk. Chris Lauria and Dave Arendas then knocked back-to-back doubles to earn a ribbie each and make the score 2-0 Tar Heels. Although UNC made two fifth inning errors, Maryland was unable to capitalize, as starter Kreg Gresham pitched out of the jam. In the bottom of the inning, the Tar Heels increased their lead. Darin Campbell earned a free pass with one out, then scored when Tom Nevin's grounder to short was misplayed and went into the outfield. Campbell showed tremen dous hustle in garnering the third Carolina score. In the sixth, Carolina's heads-up play continued. Dave Arendas began the inning by fouling out, but Ryan Howison walked and Levis singled to put men on first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Wooten then executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Howison. By the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, Gresham had fallen into the habit of allowing the lead-off Ter rapin to reach base. This defect caught Gresham in the eightn. After Lou Hoicomb singled to begin the inning, Scott Patterson flew out to right. Pete McHugh walked, then Gresham hung a curveball to catcher Preston Warner, who responded by knocking a dinger over the left-field fence to close the gap to 4-3. In the ninth, Gresham again put the leadoff runner on base, walking Cap Post. That brought on freshman reliever Woodall. Post advanded to second on a Dave Sentman grounder and third on a Jerry Guzolik grounder. And so with two out, the tying run on third, and Holcomb at the plate, Woodall tossed a pitch that bounced well in front of the plate, escaped the glove of Levis, and tied the game at 4-4 as Post romped home. The Tar Heels made two quick flyouts in the bottom of the ninth, and when Maurer hit a grounder to third, extra innings seemed assured. But Guzolik sent the ball three feet over the head of first baseman Patterson, and Maurer went to second on the error. With two out and Maurer on, Lauria hit the first pitch for an RBI single, ending the game. "He had thrown me a fastball on the outside corner for the first pitch each time up, and I made up my mind, if he pitched that, I'd swing." Lauria said of the game-winning play. The Tar Heels' victory came after a doubleheader split with Virginia Saturday. The Heels clobbered UVa. 12-1 in the first game behind the four hit pitching of John Thoden and three home runs. In the second game however, UVa. used seven ninth inning runs to break a 6-5 lead into a 13-5 rout. The victory was the Wahoos' first over the Tar Heels since the 1985 ACC Tournament. 3Hy latlg Wat Mnl Classified AdvertDsimig Classified Info The Daily Tar Heel does not accept cash for payment of clas sified advertising.
