6The Daily Tar Heel Tuesday, April 12, 1988 Sports Free ads: FOUND ads will run five days FREE. Gymnastics finish 7th in region By KEITH PARSONS Safl Writer The UNC gymnastics team had a rough time over the weekend in Gainesville, Fla., placing seventh in the NCAA regionals. Georgia took the team title with 189.80 points, followed by Florida with 189.10. Towson State (184.00), Kentucky ( 1 84.35), Maryland ( 1 8 1 .40) and West Virginia (181.00) all finished ahead of the Tar Heels, w ho had 178 points. The one bright spot for North Carolina was senior Stacy Kaplan, who placed seventh overall with 37.15 points. Kaplan's best routine was on the balance beam, where she tied for ninth with fellow Tar Heel Carrie Suto with a 9.3. She added a 9.45 on vault, placing her 12th. She also finished ninth on floor, receiving a 9.5. Kaplan's problems came on the uneven bars, where she only manage an 8.9, which place her 29th. Suto finished ninth overall, scoring 37 points. Besides her tie with Kaplan on the beam, Suto had a 9.4 on the vault, good for 20th place. She added a 9.25 on the bars, good for 14th, and a 9.05 on the floor, which put her 27th. "Since I had never been there, 1 just wanted to do the best I could in all of the routines," Suto said. "The scoring was a little tighter, but it was very fair." Kristin Bilotta had good routines on beam and vault, finishing 16th with a 9.20 on beam and scoring a 9.05 on vault. She placed 27th overall. Debbie Sigler had a solid vault, posting a 8.90, and wound up 31st overall. Missy Shaffner, one of the two co captains with Kaplan, had a very good vault, scoring a 9.20, but did not peform as well as she had during the season, finishing 32nd. "It was a little disappointing not finishing higher, but a couple of the girls hit routines they hadn't hit all year," Shaffner said. "We just made some unfortunate mistakes."
