8The Daily Tar Heel Wednesday, April 13, 1988 Tar Heels strand two in 9th, fall to Blue Devols on rain, 4-3 By KEITH PARSONS Staff Writer Tuesday night's baseball game between UNC and Duke was sup posed to be easy for the Tar Heels. After all, this w as the same Blue Devil team North Carolina ripped 21-9 in the last meeting between the two teams. Unfortunately for the Tar Heels, the game did not come out that way. Duke, which had lost 19 games in a row until a Sunday victory over Georgia Tech, used strong pitching and timely hitting to defeat UNC 4 3 at Boshamer Stadium. The game was played under a cold, steady mist, and the announced attendance was only 25. Tar Heel head coach Mike Roberts said the idea to cancel the game never entered his mind. "I'm a firm believer that if you have a game scheduled, you should play it," said Roberts, whose team fell to 7-7 in the ACC and 21-15 overall. "We have to understand when to turn it on. Until this team figures out the difference between games, we're going to struggle." The Tar Heels nearly came back in the ninth, but shortstop Ron Maurer's drive to left-center was nabbed by Duke centerfielder Kevin Burrin. 5Hy latlg STar 3k?l Classified AdveirtosDinig Classified Info The Daily Tar Heel does not accept cash for payment of clas sified advertising. His record dropped to 4-3. Don Fowler won his second game against seven losses for the Blue Devils, w ho are now 2-1 1 in the ACC, 9-26 overall. Troy Blackburn picked up the save, pitching the final three innings and allowing only one hit. The game started under dark skies and had an equally ominous begin ning. Blue Devil lead-off man Rick Torgalski planted a 2-2 Lodgek fastball over the rightfield fence, giving Duke a quick 1-0 lead. The Tar Heels came back in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game on Chris DeFranco's fourth dinger of the season. In the top of the third, Duke put some distance on UNC, scoring three times off Lodgek. After one out, Torgalski reached base on an infield single and moved to second on Rich Beviglia's walk. David Hawkins then ripped a single up the middle, scoring Torgalski. Lodgek then struck out John Furch, but Doug Eastman singled to right, bringing Beviglia home with the third Blue Devil run. David Norman followed with a single of his own, allowing Hawkins to score. Eastman was thrown out trying to reach third run. Ads must be prepaid. For the next three and a half innings, the game boiled down to a pitcher's duel between Lodgek and Fowler. Lodgek was particularly strong in that stretch, giving up only one hit and striking out three. Then came the bottom of the seventh and a patented UNC rally. Brad Woodall led off with a single, and pinch hitter Steve Estroff drew a walk. Blackburn came in to face Darin Campbell, with Darren Villani running for Estroff. Campbell then moved both Woodall and Villani up one base with a sacrifice. Tom Nevin followed with a clutch single off of Duke shortstop James Smith's glove, bringing home both Woodall and Villani to close the Blue Devil lead to 4-3. In the Tar Heel ninth, Woodall led off with a walk, with Paul Warzocha running for him. After Villani sac rificed and Campbell popped up, Nevin drew a walk, setting the stage for Maurer's near heroics. The Tar Heels travel to Raleigh today to face N.C.
