10The Daily Tar Heel Thursday, April 14, 1988 Sports Wrestler ECoil caps oultsf andin. career with Pattersoim Media Classified Advertoson From staff reports Well, Rob Koll has done it again. The senior from State College, Pa., has won another award. This time it's the prestigious Patterson Medal, given to this institution's most out standing senior athlete. All Koll did to earn it was win the NCAA wrestling championship, becoming only UNC's second national champion, and trashing school and conference records in the meantime. His career has seen his accumulate almost every wrestling award and superlative possible. Koll was ranked the number one wrestler in the country for the entire wrestling season, as he posted a 37 0 record against collegiate competi tion and a 41-1 record overall. In February, he defeated Glen Lanham of Oklahoma State in the National Wrestling Coaches Associ ation All-Star tournament, winning that for the second year in a row. Last summer he was chosen to travel with an NCAA all-star team which went to Italy. As he headed into the NCAA tournament in March, he was as ) Rob Koll determined as ever. Even a knee injury in the first round of the tournament wouldn't stop him. He pinned his opponent in the finals, Joe Pantaleo of Michigan, in a blinding 74 seconds to capture his first title. For his career, he became the first UNC Wrestler to rack up Ail American laurels for four years in a row, including being the only Tar Heel freshman to ever attain those honors. His career record of 155-20-1 set an ACC record for victories, and those totals include 49 pins and 27 major decisions. In addition to his individual accomplishments, he has helped the team win three ACC titles and a second-place finish this year. The team has finished in the top 20 each of Koll's four years, including two top 10 appearances. The Patterson Medal was estab lished in 1924 by Dr. Joseph Patter son in memory of his brother John Durand Patterson, and each year a committee of athletic officials, faculty members and student representatives gather to select the winner. The medal is awarded to a UNC senior who has demonstrated general excellence in athletics throughout his career. The award is based on athletic accomplishment, sportsmanship, leadership, and general conduct. Last year basketball star Kenny omun won tne award. Under Ripken, the Orioles lost their first six games of the 1988 season, their worst start in 33 years, after finishing the 1987 season with a 67-95 record, their third-worst season mark ever. Robinson, elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1982, was six games into his first season in a front-office position as a special assistant to the president. He has been a member of the Orioles' organization as player, coach or in the front office for 13 years. The first black to manage in the major league, Robinson now begins his third stint as a big league manager. His first assignment was with the Cleveland Indians from 1974-77, then he worked for the San Francisco Giants from 1981-84. "I don't think I ever felt the pressure of being in the position of being a black manager," Robinson said. "I am aware of the pressure of the position, but I doni let it bother me." Only two other blacks have man aged in the major leagues, Larry Doby with the Chicago White Sox in 1978 and Maury Wills managed Seattle in 1980-81. Ripken, who has been in the Orioles' organization for 32 years, had no forewarning a move was going to be made. "There was no indication that it was coming. I was in uniform. I was at my desk getting ready to write the lineup." Ripken became the Orioles man ager following the 1986 season, becoming the first man to manage two sons - Cal Ripken Jr. and Billy - simultaneously in major league baseball. He was 67-101 as the Orioles manager over one season plus six games. Roland Hemond, the Orioles g.m., said Ripken will stay on with the Orioles in a front-office capacity.
