OmnibusThursday, April 14, 19889 V 7 . 1s NEXT WEEK'S MOVIES (by theater) "Au Revoir Les Enfants" (PC) Louis Maile wrote, produced and directed this semi autobiographical film about his experience during World War n at a Catholic boarding school that sheltered Jews during the holo caust. Julien (Gaspard Manesse). who represents Malle. is asked to befriend Jean (Raphael Fejto), one of the anonymous Jews. Their friendship develops slowly through a series of episodes at the harsh private school until one day the Gestapo finally comes. Malle stays detached from the action, as though he does not really want to accept what had happened to one of his classmates, but he cannot forget - and, after seeing this haunting, powerful film, neither will we. it earned well deserved Academy Award nomi nations for Best Foreign Film and Best Original Screenplay, varsity: 2:15, 415, 7:15 and 9:15 p.m. "Manon Of The Spring" Reviewed in this issue. Varsity: 2, 410, 7 and 9:10 p.m. "The Unbearable Lightness Of Being" (R) A sensuous, dramatic tale of love and anguish set during the 1968 invasion of Prague. Directed by Philip Kaufman ("The Right Stuff") and starring Daniel Day-Lewis ("My Beautiful Laundrette," "Room With A View"). Carolina: 8:30 p.m. only, weekend matinees at 1:45 and 5 p.m. "Bad Dreams" (R) Another "Nightmare On Elm Street" clone? Who knows, but it's sure to figure highly on the ketch up scale. Carolina: 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. "The Last Emperor" (PG-13) The fascinating, epic true story of last Emperor Pu Yi, who was crowned ruler of China and Lord of Ten Thousand Years at the age of 3 and died in 1967 as a humble gardener in the Federal Republic. Sumptuous location shooting and much color and imagery charac terize Bernardo Bertolucci's slightly distanced direction. John Lone is stunning in the lead role. Also stars Joan Chen and Peter OToole. The film scooped, and deserved, all 9 of its Academy Award nominations. Plaza: 8:30 p.m. only. "Bright Lights. Big City" (R) Michael J. Fox and Kiefer Suther land star in this screen version of Jay Mclnerny's novel of corruption in yuppiedom. Plaza: 3, 5:05, 7:10 and 9:20 p.m. "The Fox and The Hound" (G) An animated Disney classic. Plaza. 2:45, 4:45 and 6:45 p.m. only "Little Nikita" (PC) A teenager's life is torn apart as he is catapulted into the fright ening world of international espionage. Starring River Phoenix VffWjv j r s j f '& c ' and Sidney Poitier. Plaza: 2:50, 450, 7 and 9 p.m. "Return To Snowy River Part H" Ram: 7 and 9 p.m. "Biloxi Blues" One of Neil Simon's best ven tures on the big screen, this is the second installment of his autobi ographical series. It is basically a rites of passage drama-comedy set in world War II, the plot of which is amusing if not completely sound, stars Matthew Broderick; also, Christopher Walken turns in a fine performance as the eccent ric sergeant. Ram 7:05 and 9:10 p.m. "Beetlejuice" (PG-13) Michael Keaton stars as a bizarre ghost in this comedy about a couple of humans who invade a haunted house rendering it unli able, even for the dead. Ram: 7:10 and 9:15 p.m. UNION MOVIES "The Living Daylights" Timothy Dalton is so good as the new James Bond that it makes you realize just how stale Roger Moore was becoming. Dalton's Bond is more dashing and daring than his predecessor's, but certainly less promiscuous. What did you expect, guys, this is the '80s. it doesn't matter though, because leading lady Maryam D'Abo is a real stunner.
